THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2011.Auburn residents feel ‘betrayed’ by councillor Members of Bronnenco Construction Limited asked to speak to Huron County Council at its Feb. 9 meeting, regarding the tendering of the Huron East seniors apart- ments. Two members spoke to council regarding their displeasure at the process that led to their bid being deemed non-compliant. They felt that it should have been the other way around and that their bid should have been ruled compliant while other bids were non-compliant. A subcontractor that is said to be used by the successful applicant was allegedly not willing to lend its serv- ices at the time the tenders closed, so Bronnenco changed its bid to reflect this change. Other applicants, how- ever, included the subcontractor on their applications, the representative said, which would have meant that the subcontractors figures would have been prepared after the dead- line, thus making the successful bid non-compliant. “This is irresponsible on [the sub- contractor’s] part. It’s an insult to subcontractors, the public and the tendering system,” said Reiner Janssen of Bronnenco Construction. After a session that was closed to the public, Huron County council- lors received the reasoning behind the decision to accept the successful bid, going in-camera for legal rea- sons. After re-emerging from closed session, council voted to proceed with the tender as originally direct- ed. Huron East’s Bernie MacLellan asked for a recorded vote, but every councillor voted in favour of the original recommendation, making the vote unanimous with just George Robertson not voting because he was absent. The feeling of betrayal has been apparent in the village over the last two weeks. A man who knocked on our doors last summer asking for our support made an almost unforgive- able comment during a council meeting – this comment will likely determine the fate of the village with respect to the discussion of amalga-mation with one of the three munic-ipalities currently housed within ourborders. Central Huron Councillor AlexWesterhout suggested that the vil-lage of Auburn “secede from Canadaor something” to solve its currentissue of fire coverage along with thelack of other services. This comes assomewhat of a surprise to residents considering Mr. Westerhout attended Auburn Playground Committee functions to show his support. He also attended the meeting with regard to the fire coverage that was held before Christmas, at which the discussion of amalgamating with one municipality began. During this meeting Mr. Westerhout was heard by several residents saying that heunderstood the concerns of residentswith regard to the fire coverage andlack of services to the village.Residents believed that he was thereto help – not to slam the door.It is the feeling of many residentsof the part of the village located inthe Municipality of Central Huronthat Mr. Westerhout should perhapsexplain his comment. Was this com- ment one of those guffaws that politicians make when they believe no one is really listening? Or does Mr. Westerhout truly believe that we are being overly dramatic about the situation at hand? Many would also be interested to hear what the position of the other council members of Central Huron might be with regard to Mr.Westerhout’s comment. The Auburn Knox United Churchwill be holding its annual meetingfollowing the church service on Feb.20. For the lunch, families with sur-names from A to H are asked to pro-vide the sandwiches and from I to Zto provide the dessert. Please notethat the time of service has beenchanged for Feb. 20 to 11 a.m. The Knox UCW will meet on Friday, Feb. 18 at the church for an all day “Quilting and Tying” session to complete quilts for their Mission and Community Outreach projects. Come anytime after 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. The Playground Committee would like to remind residents who are interested in submitting letters ofsupport for the Trillium Foundationfunding application that they willneed to be provided to theCommittee by Feb. 18. CommitteePresident Juanita Hamp will beattending next week to finalize theapplication. It is the committee’s hope that theTrillium funding will allow newplayground equipment to be pur- chased and installed by summer.
