This week at Blyth Public School
kindergarten classes concentrated
on friendship by discussing what
exactly good friends look, sound
and act like. They made a list of
things we can do for others to be a
good friend. They sang songs and
learned funny poems about
Valentine’s.
The senior students exchanged
Valentine’s Day cards and they read
the fairytale “Hansel and Gretel”,
put the story into sequence and
made a connection to a time when
they had been lost. They
concentrated on the letter “H” this
week. The junior students learned
about the letters “D” and the colour
red. They started a unit on nursery
rhymes and played games that
furthered the understanding of the
lessons they were trying to teach or
the emotion they were trying to
portray.
The junior students exchanged
Valentine’s Day cards on Monday.
Three teachers from Blyth Public
School went to the “Reading for the
Love of it” conference in Toronto.
The teachers are hoping to be able
to bring back the newest research to
share with the rest of the staff and
students.
Report cards went home on Feb.
14.
In math, the Grade 7/8 class
finished its geometry unit last week.
Most students were very successful
in this unit and are beginning to
understand how to calculate the area
and circumference of a circle. In art,
the students have begun to create
their reproductions of the Group of
Seven artwork.
Thanks to Mrs. Thomas and the
Grade 7/8 Can Crushers, Kids
Giving Water has received another
approximately $40 towards its
Kenyan well. So please keep those
cans coming in.
Last week, the Grade 5/6 class
started writing persuasive letters in
language class. The students have
also begun to learn how to infer
while reading. In science, the class
broke their bridges after weighing
the bridges down with weights.
The results were the Strong Hold
Bridge company, held – 2200
grams. Strong Bridge Inc. held 2300
grams, Company of Six (did not get
their bridge fully built in time), and
the Wicked Falcons held 3100
grams.

United Way hosts
annual hockey game
The weather held and players,
coaches, volunteers and spectators
met at the South Huron Recreation
Centre for the Perth/Huron All-Star
Game in support of the United Way
of Perth-Huron earlier this month.
This year the Perth versus Huron
match-up was as exciting as always.
Both the Perth and Huron All-
Stars played a great game keeping
the score close all night, but
eventually Perth edged out Huron
County by a final score of 4-2.
Officiating the on ice action were
referees Al Dickinson, Trevor Seip
and Nick Cameron.
The Most Valuable Player Award
for Team Huron went to Gina
Murray from F.E. Madill Secondary
School and Perth’s MVP award
went to Vanessa Armstrong from
Listowel District Secondary School.
The All-Star Girl Hockey players
were represented by four schools in
Perth, and five schools from Huron
County who brought amazing talent
and skill to the annual game.
George Robertson, South Huron’s
mayor dropped the puck at 7 p.m.
after a beautifully-performed
national anthem by Katie Hartai.
Overall the event raised over
$1,000 towards the United Way of
Perth-Huron’s 2010 campaign.
Adam, Neil and Todd Martin have
a lot to be happy about after their
medal and award-winning martial
arts performances at Chung Oh’s
School of Tae Kwon Do in
Kitchener.
The young trio, who have been
practising the Korean-based martial
art for three and a half years in
Todd’s case, two and a half years in
Neil’s case and just over six months
in Adam’s case, received accolades
at the tournament, including Neil’s
Champion of the Year award.
Neil also won bronze and silver
medals, while Todd won two gold
medals and Adam brought home
silver and bronze medals.
The Martins attend Listowel’s
branch of Chung Oh’s School, and
the decision to have them participate
in the martial arts program was one
of logistics according to their
mother Pam.
“The joy with them participating
is that they have classes on Monday
and Wednesday every week,” she
