Although they came out with a
loss, the Brussels Novice Bulls
worked hard in a 5-3 game with to
Blyth last week.
Goals were scored by Myles
Johnston and Ryan Jacklin with his
first goal, unassisted.
The team will play one more game
before heading into playoffs.
Brussels Tykes best Seaforth
The Brussels Tyke Bulls beat
Seaforth last week by a score of 6-2.
The bench was depleted because
several players were away, but
thanks to goals by Bennett Smith
and Christopher Pennington,
Brussels was able to pull out a win.
Assists were tallied by Taylor
Long, Joel Nesbitt,
Brett McCutcheon and Lucas
Jacklin.
Late last month, Brussels took on
their neighbours the Blyth Bulldogs,
winning by a score of 7-5.
Goals against Blyth were scored
by Luke Fritz, Smith, Jackson
McDonald, Dawson Dunbar and
Tyson Fischer.
Ironmen sweep Sailors in round one of playoffsAfter scoring an 8-3 decision overthe Goderich Sailors in game one of
the best-of-five quarter-final series,
the Wingham Ironmen scored a total
of eight goals in the final two games
to sweep the series in three straight
games.
Playing at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Friday, the Ironmen held up a four-
goal first period as they posted a 4-0
win to wrap up the series over the
weekend.
Cory MacDonald had a goal and
two assists to spark the offence for
the Ironmen. Wade Stephenson had
a pair of goals and captain Chris
Corbett chipped in with a goal.
Graham Ashcroft picked up two
assists.
From a player’s perspective,
forward Dan Dery of Blyth said the
Ironmen started off well.
He said the Ironmen were
forechecking well in the first period,
but let up a bit in the second and
third periods. The Ironmen limited
Goderich to just three shots in the
first period as they outshot the
Sailors 40-20.
“We were trying to keep the puck
out of our zone and not let Goderich
get a shot on net,” he said.
Dery said the Ironmen were able
to limit the number of shots on net
and Will Sibley was able to pick up
the shut out.
Coach Chad Haggitt said the
objective was to get a good lead onthe Sailors and the 4-0 first periodadvantage was just the lead theyneeded. He said the Ironmen then played
smart hockey so that no one would
get injured.
According to Haggitt, the Ironmen
didn’t want a shot against them, let
alone a goal.
In game two of the quarter-final
series, played last Tuesday at the
Maitland Recreation Centre in
Goderich, goals by C. Corbett
and MacDonald lifted the
Ironmen to a 4-3 decision over the
Sailors.
Greg Trotter gave Goderich a 1-0
lead at 6:56 of period one. Jaden
Goetz made it 2-0 at 1:267 of the
second period.
Jake Robb got the Ironmen on the
scoreboard at 4:21 with Aaron
Armstrong assisting. C. Corbett tied
the score at 11:56 with help from
Tyler Kellum. Ben Gowing gave the
Sailors a 3-2 lead at 15:02.
C. Corbett tied the game at three at
7:47 of period three with Kellum
getting the assist. MacDonald netted
the winner at 9:20 with help from
Chase Chapman.
The Ironmen play the Mitchell
Hawks in the next round of playoffs,
with game one of the best-of-seven
series being played Friday at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex.
“We are going to play our game
against them, the way we’ve played
them all season,” he said.

Lightning shut out all competitors at Silver Stick
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee
AA Lightning took the Feb. 5-6
Silver Stick tournament gold medal
without letting up a goal through
their five games in Sarnia.
The team played Sarnia, Ancaster
and Buffalo in the tournament’s first
round, winning every game and
moving onto the semi-finals.
After a 4-0 win in the semi-finals,
the Lightning took on the hometown
Sarnia Sting in the finals, eventually
winning the contest by a score of 5-
0.
Goals were scored over the
weekend by Avery Reeves, Neve
VanPett, Jessica Dales, Kaitlyn
Eckert, Amy Hepburn, Olivia
Linklater, Abbi Atkins and Kayla
McCabb. And while the team’s
goaltenders didn’t see much action,
they were solid when tested, keeping
the puck out of the Saugeen
Maitland net all tournament.
Late last month the girls played a
double-header against their first AA
team, since their move to that
division, in the London Devilettes.
The girls played two very fast-
paced games. London opened the
scoring with a deflected goal that
crossed up the defence, but Saugeen
Maitland struck right back with a top
shelf goal by Dales and then a quick
second goal by Atkins, winning the
first game by a score of 2-1. The
girls tied the second game with
London, 1-1, despite only having 10
skaters.
Bantam Lightning top London
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee
AA Lightning began their playoff
battle with London last week,
winning their first game against the
rival Devilettes by a score of 2-0.
The Lightning outpowered and
outskated London and with a few
penalties it wasn’t easy, but Shannon
O’Reilly opened up the scoring with
help from Lexi Smith, who scored
one minute later to stretch the
Saugeen Maitland lead to two goals.
The girls were in Stratford at the
end of January, leaving with a win in
their final league game of the season.
The Bolts won by a score of 2-0
with Lexi Smith scoring both of the
team’s goals.
