Brussels Atom Bulls advance to OMHA “E” Finals
The Brussels Atom Bulls swept
their second series in OMHA
playdowns, beating Bothwell in
three straight games.
The Bulls travelled to Bothwell on
Friday, Feb. 4 to begin their OMHA
semi-final against the Blast. Not
knowing what to expect from
Bothwell the Atom Bulls were
anticipating a tough series, however
the Bulls were up to the challenge.
After feeling each other out for a few
minutes, the Bulls were able to tally
the first goal on the powerplay when
Jack Pipe scored assisted by Noah
Terpstra at the 4:54 mark of the first
and held that lead into the second
period. A minute into the second,
Bothwell tied the game, however at
the 8:11 mark of the second period,
the Bulls regained the lead they
would never give up when Terpstra
scored unassisted.
The score was 2 - 1 headed for the
third period and at the 12:58 mark of
the period the Bulls scored when
Pipe scored assisted by Ronan Jarrod
and Jacob Roth. Bothwell scored
three minutes later but that was as
close as they would come because
then the floodgates opened as the
Bulls scored five unanswered goals
in the third. Terpstra scored a
powerplay goal at the 7:40 mark
assisted by Hudson Smith, then 17
seconds later Pipe got the hattrick
unassisted. Terpstra got his hattrick
unassisted with 5:17 remaining in
the third with Pipe scoring two more
with an assist going to Nolan
Johnston on the seventh goal.
The final score was 8 - 2, giving
the Bulls a well-earned road win to
start the series and a good omen as
the quarter-final sweep also started
with a win on the road.
Last weekend saw Bothwell return
to Brussels for two games beginning
Saturday afternoon.
The Bulls scored first with only 22
seconds remaining in the first period,
when Terpstra scored unassisted.
The second period saw the Bulls pull
away with the game when Johnston
found the back of the net assisted by
Pipe at the 14-minute mark and then
12 seconds later Terpstra scored
unassisted to make the score 3 - 0 for
the Bulls. Terpstra then scored a
hattrick at the 9:23 mark before
scoring again 30 seconds later
assisted by Roth. Pipe then scored
unassisted to allow the Bulls to lead
by six goals after two periods.
The Bulls continued the onslaught
when Terpstra scored again assisted
by Pipe. The Blast finally solved
Thompson in the third when they
jammed a puck through to spoil the
shut out.
Terpstra made it six goals on the
game with 6:20 remaining when he
scored unassisted and then Pipe
scored assisted by Smith to make the
final score 9 - 1 in favour of
Brussels. With the win on Saturday
the game on Sunday now gave the
Bulls a chance to eliminate
Bothwell and sweep the series at
home.
The Bulls needed a quick start and
they got it when 23 seconds into the
game Avery McArter scored assisted
by Terpstra. With a number of
chances at the Bothwell net, Pipe
was able to score one at the 4:04
mark of the first and that was all the
scoring that would happen on this
day as the Bulls were able to defeat
Bothwell and sweep the series in
three games.
The Bulls peppered the Bothwell
goalie on numerous occasions but
were unable to get any more by the
goalie as the score of this game was
quite different than the previous two
games. The Bulls will now face a
team from northern Ontario
beginning in the second week of
March for the OMHA Atom E title.
The Bulls will be busy however as
the WOAA playoffs are in full
swing.
In the WOAA playoffs the Bulls
are playing a home-and-home series
with five other teams in their group
with the top team advancing to the
Gregg Division championship. The
first game in WOAA playoffs was
against the Teeswater Otters.
Teeswater opened the scoring 53
seconds into the game but only seven
seconds later Pipe scored unassisted
from the face off to tie the game at
one. Brussels tallied twice more in
the first when Terpstra scored
assisted by Pipe and then with 5.6
seconds remaining, Pipe scored
unassisted to give the Bulls a 3 - 1
lead after one period.
The second period saw a lone goal
scored by Pipe assisted by Terpstra
and Chris Hruska. The Bulls’ scoring
continued into the third when Roth
scored assisted by Terpstra and
Johnston to make the score 5 - 1 until
Teeswater caught the Bulls napping
and scored two quick goals to make
the final score 5 - 3. The next game
was a trip to Listowel AE to take on
the Cyclones. The game was close
for the first two periods as Brussels
opened the scoring halfway through
the first when Pipe scored
unassisted.
Listowel tied the game at 58
seconds into the second period and
then two minutes later Brussels took
the lead they would never give up
when Terpstra scored unassisted.
Brussels then scored five
unanswered goals with Terpstra
scoring twice, with singles put up by
A. McArter, Roth and Pipe. Assists
went to Pipe, Roth with two, Brent
Alexander with two, Hudson Smith,
A. McArter and Johnston. Nick
McArter was solid in net for the
Bulls.
Last Friday night saw Arran-
Elderslie come to Brussels and it
would turn out to be one of the
tougher games on the Bulls. The
Bulls opened the scoring when Pipe
scored, assisted by Ted Jacklin, and
would take a 1 - 0 lead after one
period.
Arran-Elderslie had tied the score
in the second until the 2:10 mark
when Brussels took another lead to
the end of a period when Terpstra
scored unassisted. Arran-Elderslie
tied the score again 30 seconds into
the third until with two minutes left
the Bulls took the lead when Pipe
scored again unassisted and then 40
seconds later Pipe completed the
hattrick assisted by Roth and A.
McArter.
With 36 seconds remaining,
Arran-Elderslie scored and then with
14 seconds left they tied the game to
send it to overtime. With 6:01 left in
overtime, Arran-Elderslie was able
to win the game with a goal that
Nick McArter got a piece of but just
not enough, to give the Bulls their
first loss in playoffs this year. This
was a great game with lots of
chances by both teams.
The next action for the Atom Bulls
will be next weekend in WOAA
playoffs when they see Listowel
come to town Friday night for a
home game at 7:30 p.m. and then the
Bulls travel to Paisley to play Arran-
Elderslie on Saturday at 11 a.m. and
then travel to Keady on Sunday to
take on TCDMHA for a 12:30 p.m.
game.
Bringing home the gold
The Blyth/Brussels Bantam Girls travelled to Aylmer
recently, playing five intense games and bringing the gold
medal back to the area. Back row, from left: assistant coach

Kaitlyn Michie, Ashley Delapena, Taylor Higgins, assistant
trainer Ken Higgins and trainer Kim Higgins. Middle row,

Blyth Bantams best West Lorne
The Blyth Bantam Rep Bulldogs
defeated the West Lorne Hornets in
game three of the best-of-five series
last weekend by a score of 2-1.
That victory clinched the series
and they now await either Flesherton
or Grand Valley.
Special teams played a large role
for the Bulldogs, especially when
they scored in two-man and one-man
disadvantaged situations as well as a
powerplay marker during a 3-0 win
at West Lorne last week.
Overall team defence,
backstopped by Dalton Carey’s
excellent goaltending, has led the
Bulldogs to date.
Players and management would
like to say thank you to the fans for
their continued support during their
drive to yet another Blyth all-
Ontario Championship.
Atom Girls finish 7-4-5
The Blyth-Brussels Atom Girls
have finished up their WOAA league
season late last month with a seven
wins, four losses and five ties.
On Jan. 23, the team hosted the
Markdale Shooting Stars in
Brussels.
The girls played hard, but were
unable to get a goal. Markdale’s
captain Megan Wilton scored four of
the team’s five goals.
On Saturday, Jan. 29, the girls
hosted Saugeen Shores in Blyth.
The girls had played Saugeen early
in the season with a 2-2 tie result, so
the team was keen for a win.
The first two periods showed a lot
of equal play and many shots on
Saugeen’s net were shut down.
Both teams switched netminders
midway through the second
period.
Finally, in the third period, the
team executed a textbook play.
Defenseman, Alexandra (Bobbie)
Martin cleared the puck from her
end to winger Morgan Willie who
passed it to centreman Sarah
Strome, who went in for the shot on
net.
The lone goal of the game was on
the home team’s board.
It was a great job by both goalies
Julia Beaven and Clarissa Gordon.
For the final game of league play
the girls travelled to Ayton on
Sunday, Jan. 30.
The team knew they would have to
work hard as they were short three
players.
The first period remained
scoreless with some close calls at the
net on both sides. In the second
period, Blyth/Brussels recorded the
first goal on a one-timer from the
corner by Brookelyn Johnston fed to
Alicia Ireland in front of the net.
But the lead wouldn’t prove to
hold for long when Ayton tied things
up five minutes later.
The final score remained tied at
one.
