PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN
Caste system mirrored in economic decisions
Continued from page 6
with. I really wonder when the
“small dot community” citizens will
say “enough is enough!”
Many, many years ago I learned of
the caste system in India, and its
implications in terms of self-
actualization of people. As the
school closure issues in Huron
County (including Zurich, Brussels,
and so on) became apparent, I began
to realize that we too have our own
version of the caste system in
Ontario – and within our own
governing bodies. Elected officials,
and bureaucracy, determine through
such things as census division-
labelled, single-tier, upper-tier and
districts who gets what: a form of
economic caste system.
To put it succinctly, services are
provided and implemented
differently, at different times, by
different governments to serve
specific needs, and I might add, in
my opinion, based on different
positions and interests of elected
officials and political parties.
Blyth, and others, may happen to
be in the wrong economic
community castes. I think the future
of rural Ontario, and its citizens will
be determined by strategic choices
citizens make in terms of where we
decide to live in the future.
For instance, is the community a
single-tier, upper-tier, or district
before making the determination
related to community of choice?
This has significant bearing in terms
of what impact decision makers can
have economically on our lives.
As this school issue evolves, and
we begin to experience the impact
(more kids sent off on buses to
school, less new, and young families
wanting to live here, declining real
estate values) then we will know.
Small voice. Small votes. Small
chance. Unless.
We should choose wisely.
Greg Sarachman, Blyth.
Rural property bylaw comes back to ACW
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
Township’s Rural Property
Standards Bylaw Committee
will be meeting again in the near
future.
After hammering out a bylaw,
members of the committee said that
the need for the bylaw seemed to
evaporate, but it was brought back at
the request of councillor Barry
Millian.
Despite several members of the
committee believing that the end
bylaw will not be necessary, they
will be meeting to confirm wording
and intent of the bylaw and bring it
back to a future ACW meeting.
Fire coverage issue still burning
ACW council will be contacting
North Huron Council regarding the
2010 fire proposal, but, if the
councils can agree, that will
only be the beginning of the
transition.
Chief Administrative Officer
Mark Becker stated that there would
be several months of work due to
having to change the 911 numbers
and directing, as well as determining
the coverage area North Huron’s fire
department would be providing
service for.
