The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning rattled off four straight
wins losing a semi-final game in the
fourth overtime period against the
league rival Bluewater Hawks in the
Sarnia Silver Stick tournament this
past weekend.
The Lightning went 3-0 in round-
robin play with a 3-2 win against
Waterloo, a 4-1 victory over
Etobicoke and edging Kingston by a
score of 3-1.
In the quarter-final match against
the Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats, the
Bolts had to come back from a 2-0
deficit to eventually win 3-2 to
advance to the semi-finals against
Bluewater.
In the semi-final with Bluewater
leading 1-0, 12 seconds left and the
Lightning goalie pulled, third-year
veteran, Laken Smith was able to
tuck in the game-tying goal with
four ticks left on the clock to send
the game into overtime.
The following four periods of
overtime saw both teams with
numerous scoring chances but both
goaltenders kept the sheet clean. It
was Bluewater’s Erinn Noseworthy
who scored the game winner with
four seconds left in the fourth
overtime period to advance the
Hawks to the finals.
Scoring during the Silver Stick
were Marcie Landman with three,
Brooklyn Irwin with three, Hannah
Davidson with two, Laura Irwin
with two, L. Smith, Gina Murray,
Sara Gossell, Georgia Ottewell.
Picking up assists on the weekend
were Dollee Meigs with three,
Landman with three, Gossell with
three, L. Smith with two, Brittany
Butcher with two, Kelly Garrow
with two, B. Irwin, L. Irwin, Murray,
Ashley Reid and Nicole Marriage.
Picking up a pair of wins each in
net were goaltenders Stephanie
Sluys and Bantam call-up, Shea
Tiley.
Unfortunately, the Lightning lost
the services of steady rookie
defenceman, Abby McGavin when
she suffered a season-ending injury
early in the tournament. Her
teammates already miss Abby and
wish her a speedy recovery.

Lightning undefeated until semi-finals in tourney
The Wingham Ironmen won game
one of their best-of-five quarter-final
series with the Godericih Sailors on
Saturday evening at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex.
Chris Corbett of Brussels scored
three straight goals in the second
period as the Ironmen overcame a 3-
2 Goderich lead and the Ironmen
went on to score an 8-3 decision over
the Sailors.
Aaron Armstrong gave the
Ironmen a 1-0 lead at 4:25 of period
one. Tyler Kellum and Wade
Stephenson assisted. Sam Feagan
scored a shorthanded goal at 7:09 to
tie the score for Goderich.
Stephenson restored the one-goal
advantage for the Ironmen at 8:04.
Cory MacDonald assisted. Tyler
Million scored a powerplay goal at
12:24 to tie the score at two. Feagan
scored his second shorthanded goal
at 19:04 to give the Sailors a 3-2 lead
going into the first intermission.
Chris Corbett tied the game at
three at the 43-second mark of
period two, with Kellum and
Armstrong assisting. He netted the
goal which proved to be the winner
with help from Kellum and Adam
Corbett. He tallied his third goal at
7:40 to give the Ironmen a 5-3
advantage. Armstrong assisted.
Evan Ducharme scored at 12:38 to
give the Ironmen a three-goal
cushion. Cole Pellett assisted.
Armstrong netted his second of the
game at 5:06 of the third period to
make the score 7-3. Adam Corbett
and Kellum assisted. Stephenson
concluded the scoring at 18:29 with
his second of the game, Graham
Ashcroft assisted.
From a player’s prospective,
Stephenson said after the game, that
they started off playing sloppy
hockey.
“We knew we could play better. If
we played like we did in the second
and third periods, Goderich wouldn’t
have scored three goals,” he said.
Stephenson said the turning point
of the game was the quick goal to
start the second period.
“We were able to put the puck in
the net quite often after that,” he
said.
Coach Chad Haggitt said the
Ironmen were pretty tentative to start
the game.
“Goderich came out hard. They
had nothing to lose,” he said.
The Ironmen were able to make
some adjustments to their game in
the first intermission and in the
second period came out and played
like they could.
The coach said they have been
struggling on the powerplay and the
result was two shorthanded goals for
the Sailors.
“We’ll just have to work on our
powerplay and work out any
problems we’ve been having,” he
said.
Game two in the best-of-five series
was scheduled for Tuesday in
Goderich. Game three goes Friday in
Wingham beginning at 8 p.m. Game
four, if necessary, will be played
Saturday in Goderich, beginning at 8
p.m. and if a fifth game is required, it
will be played Sunday in Wingham,
beginning at 7 p.m.
