SportsBlyth Midget Reps advance to OMHA quarter finals
On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Blyth
Midget Rep Bulldogs travelled to
Lucknow for the fifth and final game
in the second round of OMHA
playdowns.
Right from the initial puck drop
Blyth played to win.
Their hard work paid off at 8:51 of
the first when Austin Sjaarda lit up
the scoreboard with assists from
Zack Watson and Kirby Cook.
After plenty of end-to-end action,
Sjaarda would find the mark again at
10:30 of the second from Cook and
Kody Higgins.
Five minutes later in the same
period, Eric Dwyer and Shea
McLean would get the puck to Adam
Cousins who had nicely placed
himself behind the Lucknow
defense. Higgins, minutes later
would give the visitors a four-goal
lead with passes from Ty Sebastian
and John Lecomte.
Minutes into the third, Adam
Cronin would score an unassisted
goal. Aaron Popp, less than a minute
later would finish the scoring with
the help from Cousins. Lucknow
had many chances to score, but each
time were foiled by the visitors
strong defence and goaltending.
Ryan Baker earned the 6-0 shutout
for the Dogs.
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs meet
up next against Mildmay in the
OMHA quarter finals.
On Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Midget
Reps Dogs met up with Lucknow in
the fourth game of their six-point
series.
Prior to this game the point total
was even for both teams at three and
the pressure was on.
Blyth would finish the first with a
three-goal lead.
Contributing to the goal count
were McLean, Cronin and Sjaarda.
Assists were awarded to Cronin,
Sjaarda and Connor Prescott.
Blyth would again be rewarded in
the early minutes of the second with
their hard work when Sjaarda found
the mark, assisted by Zach Watson
and Cronin.
Unfortunately, Lucknow was not
in agreement with the home team’s
successes and in the dying seconds
of the second period, would tie the
score up with four unanswered
goals.
About five minutes into the third
frame, the home team would get two
unassisted goals, 11 seconds apart to
open up the distance, from Kirby
Cook and Aaron Popp. Less than
three minutes later Blyth was in a tie
game once again, when Lucknow
would score two more goals.
With just over two minutes
remaining in the game, Cronin
would be celebrating, but not for
long, as Lucknow was not ready to
give up.
Regulation ended with both teams
tied at seven.
With just over three minutes left in
the overtime period, McLean would
end the battle with assists from
Jeremy Ross and Cronin.
The Lucknow Sepoys played host
for the third game of the OMHA
playdowns on Monday, Jan. 31 in
Lucknow.
The visitors were off their game,
right from the opening puck drop.
Lucknow would score twice in the
first and again in the second before
Blyth would find the net. Cousins
would score the only goal for the
Dogs with assists from Cronin and
McLean.
The game ended with a 4-1 loss
for Blyth.
The Sepoys hosted Blyth in the
second game of the series on
Monday, Jan. 24.
Blyth would open the scoring less
than five minutes into the game with
a goal by Cook, assisted by Cronin
and Matt Chalmers.
Lucknow would answer back three
minutes later. In the dying minutes
of the first McLean would find the
twine with help from Cronin.
Nineteen seconds later the home
team tied it up again.
Blyth would light up the
scoreboard in the next frame, when
McLean would get his second of the
night from Cronin and Jacob
McGavin, but minutes later Blyth’s
worthy opponents would do the
same.
The third period would see
Lucknow get the go-ahead goal.
Then 30 seconds later the visitors
would tied it up. McLean would get
his third of the night from Sjaarda
and Matt Popp.
The teams tied the first game at
four.

Blyth/Brussels Bantam girls get gold
The Blyth/Brussels Bantam Girls
travelled to Aylmer last weekend to
participate in the 12th annual
BADGHA hockey tournament in
Aylmer.
The team is comprised of players
from Blyth, Brussels and Wingham.
The team returned home Sunday
night with the gold medal.
Game one of the tournament saw
the girls face a familiar team from
Normanby.
The Blyth/Brussels team won 5-0.
Mackenzie McGavin opened the
scoring two minutes into the game
with the assist going to Mackenzie
Nesbitt.
The girls opened it up in the
second period with four unanswered
goals. Ashley Higgins scored
assisted by McGavin.
Jadyn Murray then put it in the
back of the net, assisted by Ashley
Higgins. Twenty-five seconds later
McGavin netted her second goal of
the game, assisted by Nesbitt and
Murray.
With less than a minute left in the
game, Nesbitt scored assisted by
McGavin and Taylor Higgins.
Lindsay Shiell received the shutout.
Game two was against the East
Lambton Eagles.
The girls came away with a 1-0
win. This was a very intense, evenly-
matched game with no score after
the first period.
With two minutes remaining in the
second period, Shelby Hinschberger
netted what proved to be the
winning goal with assists from
Ashley Higgins and Jessica
Thompson. Sydney TeRaa recorded
the shutout.
The final game of the round-robin
play saw Blyth-Brussels play the
Lucan Irish on Saturday afternoon.
This was another edge-of-your-
seat game.
Lucan opened up the scoring two
minutes into the game with a goal by
Ali Loyens assisted by Jackie
Vandenhoff. Blyth/Brussels tied it
up early in the second period with a
goal by Ashley Higgins assisted by
Ashley Delapena and Thompson.
Taylor Higgins scored an
unassisted goal to end the second
period 2-1.
Lucan fired back early in the third
period with an unassisted goal by
Vandenhoff to tie the game at two.
Some excellent plays and defensive
goaltending by Shiell ensured the
game ended in a tie.
With two wins and a tie, the
Blyth/Brussels Girls came out in
first place in Pool B. They went on
to the semi-final game to face the
second place Kent County Fillies
from Pool A.
Rested up, the girls hit the ice
Sunday afternoon determined to go
all the way. Kent County must have
had the same idea as they netted
their first goal 17 seconds into the
game.
Kristy Hawthorne scored, assisted
by Lindsay Welch and Olivia Henry.
Before the period ended, Ashley
Higgins tied it up with the assist
going to Delapena. Strong
goaltending by TeRaa and Tori
Winters kept the second and third
periods scoreless.
This put the girls into a five-
minute sudden death overtime
period. On the powerplay, the girls
were encouraged to hit the net
quickly. Ashley Higgins did just that
as she scored the game winner six
seconds into the period unassisted.
The final game saw the girls face
off against the East Lambton Eagles
for a second time.
These two evenly-matched teams
kept the game scoreless through two
periods. A minute and a half into the
third period, Nesbitt scored the only
goal of the game, assisted by
McGavin.
The girls fought hard to preserve
the win. Shiell played strong
between the pipes.
It was an exciting weekend of
hockey. The girls played strong,
intense hockey and were rewarded.
The fans were on the edge of their
seats at each game.
This tournament will prepare the
girls for the upcoming provincial
playdowns beginning later this
month.
