It has been another week of sorrow
around the Walton area as two
wonderful women of our area passed
away.
Kathleen Williamson passed
peacefully at Clinton Hospital on
Feb. 1. Our sympathies are extended
to her children Shirley and Tom and
their families. Kathleen was a quiet,
behind the scenes worker. She often
would call and offer her services at
many of the functions around
Walton. She never desired
recognition for her donations of food
or time, but loved to help when she
could. She had a sly sense of humour
that would come out when only a
few were present. We had many a
chuckle with our friend Kathleen
over the years and she will be missed
by all.
The second long-time resident to
pass was Marie Coutts. Marie passed
away peacefully with her children,
Karen and Connie, by her side at the
Seaforth Manor. Our sympathies are
extended to her girls and their
families. Marie was born just outside
of Walton in Grey Township and
after retiring from the farm, lived in
the village of Walton for over 40
years. She worked at Campbell’s in
Listowel and at Bainton’s in Blyth
for many years. She was a dedicated
member of Duff’s United Church
and UCW. She would be seen at the
turkey supper in the dressing area,
selling turkey and taking tickets in
the take-out line. She had a love of
birds including her budgies, conures
and love birds for many years and a
delightful pup named SuLing that
she would be seen with walking the
streets of Walton. Marie will be
missed by her brother Ross Bennett
and wife Marg and many members
of her extended family. Our
condolences to the Coutts and
Bennett families.
Gerald Watson is a patient in
Clinton Public Hospital and George
McCutcheon is a patient in Seaforth
Hospital. Bob Cunningham is now at
Livingston Manor.
We send out fast healing wishes to
Abby McGavin. Our poor Abby has
suffered yet another injury while
playing hockey for the Saugeen
Maitland Lightning. They were in a
tournament in Sarnia when the
injury occurred. Abby suffered a
severely broken collar bone that
required surgery at Sarnia Hospital
on Saturday evening. Abby has since
returned home, but will be awhile
before she is back to normal. Happy
healing Abby.
Neil and Marie McGavin were
away winter camping in Quebec last
week. They were joined by friends
from the London area. It is
particularly “rough” camping, but
they have a really good time.
The McGavins stopped in North
Bay on their way home to have a
visit with Heather and Bryan Kelso
and family. Grampa Neil had fun
playing with the grandchildren
including skiing and going ice
fishing. Heather’s husband Bryan is
now spending 10 days in Indonesia
for work.
Celebrating a birthday just one
year shy of turning 80 was Jane
White. She and Clarence enjoyed
eating dinner out with some
members of her family one day and
then was treated to lunch out with
Ken and Dawn White another day.
The folks of the Alexander street
apartments were shocked to hear of
the death of one of their neighbourslast week. Don Kitchener passedaway suddenly in his apartment lastweek. Our sympathies are extendedto the Kitchener family.Returning from a week’s vacationare Greg and Sharon Wilson. Theyspent a week in the Dominican
Republic at Punta Cana. They
enjoyed 80 degree plus temperatures
and about one minute of rain while
away. Relaxing was the focus of the
week and Greg can now be heard
complaining that he can’t get warm.
The Cranbrook dart club had a
good night at the boards and their
usual fun time. The high shots of the
night went to Sarah Joslin hitting 93
and Nathan Klingenberg hitting 100.
These are the two youngest players
participating, so they showed the
older folks how it’s done.
Margery Huether had a busy week
last week while home and enjoyed
watching the grandchildren playing
hockey. Margery travelled to
Brussels on Friday evening to watch
granddaughter Kennedy play. On
Saturday afternoon, grandson
Kenny, who plays with the Huron
Perth Lakers, was playing in
Stratford against a Kitchener team.
On Saturday evening she watched
grandson Ray, who plays with the
Stratford Cullitons, as they played
against Waterloo in Waterloo. Ray
has also had the opportunity to play
with the Saginau Spirits in Sarnia
and six games during the Christmas
break. Ray is living in Stratford and
goes to St. Michael’s High School.
Ray is the son of Steve and Kathy
Huether.
Mike and Nicole Noble have
returned from a great
vacation/wedding in Puerta Vallarta,
Mexico. Mike was a groomsman for
a long-time friend from Teeswater.
The groom now lives in Alberta.
There were 51 guests attending,
about half from Ontario and half
from Alberta. The resort was a
beautiful “Dreams” hotel and with a
big group, it was big fun. The food
was amazing as was the
entertainment.
They went deep-sea fishing for
eight hours, but unfortunately, no
fish. They did see humpback whales,
sea dolphins, whales, sea turtles and
stingrays.
The couple spent time playing
beach volleyball, boogie boarding,
and swimming in the ocean and
pool. The couple made lots of new
friends, enjoyed a magical wedding
and had a fantastic time.
A large bunch of friends headed
off to Jamaica for a fun vacation
including our son Scott and wife
Alicia. The other Walton area friends
included Darryl and Jody Houston,
Chris and Erin Blake, and Seaforth
area folks Brian and Jess Dolmage,
Barry Young and Sarah McDonald,
Jason Denys and Mel, Jason and
Meaghan Gemmel and Jason Hulley
and friend Chris, 16 in total. They
stayed at Breezes Rio Bueno for the
week. They had a couple of days of
rain and overcast skies most
afternoons. They went snorkeling, a
day’s catamaran trip and went to
Dunn’s River Falls. They had
excellent food and a good time.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family on the sudden passing of
Jack Shaw. Jack had been in London
and had come home, before takingill again. Our condolences to hisextended family and friends.Joelle Glanville had an unusualand special vacation. She spent twoweeks in Iquluit, Nunavutbabysitting her two nieces, Meganand Erica. They are the children of
Paul and Teresa Glanville. The
parents went to P.E.I. to look at
houses before Paul is transferred
there with the RCMP. Joelle spent
her days getting the children off to
school and then was able to ride
along with some of the RCMP
members she had met working there
this past summer. Paul and Teresa
are now living in Charlottetown.
Our daughter Kelly and her
husband Adam returned from a
fabulous month-long honeymoon in
Europe. They spent 26 days visiting
nine countries and 14 cities. They
travelled mostly by bus, took the
ferry across the English Channel and
enjoyed the experience of riding the
underground rails of England and
the train through the mountains of
Switzerland to France. They flew to
Heathrow Airport in England and
because of the five-hour time
difference, had the most part of the
day in London to explore. The first
meal they had was the traditional
fish and chips of the English.
They took the “tube” to see Big
Ben and the London Eye ferris
wheel. They saw Westminister
Abbey, where Princess Diana’s
funeral was held and Buckingham
Palace. It was later in the day by that
point, so there were not as many
tourists around so they took some
amazing photos. They had an early
morning rise to get on the bus and
catch the ferry boat to France, a 90-
minute ride and then headed to Paris.
They went to the Lido, which is on
the Avenue Des Champs Elysees and
enjoyed a cabaret show which was
great. Their bus tour of Paris
included stops at the Louvre to see
the Mona Lisa and the Eiffel Tower.
The Eiffel Tower was built for the
World’s Fair and was to be only
temporary, but the Parisian people
fell in love with it and it stayed.
They went to the Arc de Triomphe
where the tomb of the Unknown
Soldier is below the arc’s top. The
eternal flame has been burning there
since 1921.
They had a 45-minute tour of the
Catacombs which house the
underground graves in Paris. When
it was excavated, the stones were
used for many of the buildings in
Paris. Bodies were moved from
other cemeteries and placed in
particular fashion. The Notre Dame
Church is huge and very beautiful.
They returned to the Eiffel Tower but
were only allowed to go to the
second level. It was very foggy and
cold but the view even from there
was amazing. They celebrated New
Year’s Eve on the top of the Sacre
Couer Hill which overlooks the city
of Paris and enjoyed fun, food and
fireworks.
New Year’s Day was a travel and
rest day as they headed to Lucerne,
Switzerland. They enjoyed a
traditional Swiss Fondue lunch and
then went to see the Lucerne Lion
Statue. The statue of the lion is
carved in a large rock and portrays
the lion laying on a rock with a knife
stabbed in his back. It was made bythe Swiss in honour of the soldiersthat died defending the Louis Familyof France. The knife portrays thebetrayal by France for furtherevents. Adam and Kelly spent an extraday at Lucerne to go to the Swiss
Transportation Museum. They saw
trains, cars, boats and planes. There
was a large model display of all the
rail tracks that run through
Switzerland. The making of the
railway was explained in detail
including how they make the tunnels
through the mountains. The pair
took the train to Lyon, France to
meet the rest of their tour group later
that day.
They stayed the night in Lyon, and
then stopped at Port de Gard on the
way to Spain. It is a massive bridge
made of stones. It was built by the
Romans and no mortar was used. All
the rocks had to fit perfectly so the
bridge would not fall. The bridge
was three levels high each featuring
large arches, six then nine, then 35
small arches on the top.
The French/Spain border is an
open border so there is no need to
stop. A red stone statue marks the
crossing which is located at the base
of two mountains on each side
creating a natural border. They
arrived in Barcelona and enjoyed a
night tour of the city.
The next day was a travel day and
it rained most of the time, so they
settled into their seats on the bus and
enjoyed a movie. The tour guide was
great and while driving entertained
the group with a French history
lesson and interesting facts about
France and their kings.
The newlyweds had been in three
countries at this point and have seen
some wonderful sights and some
beautiful scenery. The food for the
most part at this point has been
pretty good and I will continue their
adventure next week.
Duff’s United Church welcomed
Rev. Peter back from his holiday in
Sierra Leone, his country of birth.
Hopefully, I will get to speak to him
about his trip later this week.
Flowers were placed in memory of
Kathleen Williamson by her family.
There was coffee served following
the service on Sunday. Next Sunday,
Feb. 13, there will be breakfast
following the church service.
The UCW ladies have been busy
this past week serving the funeral
lunches for the late Kathleen
Williamson and for the late Marie
Coutts. Thanks to the many ladies
required to organize, provide food
and help for the day.
