A few extra flakes in the air kept the shadow story simple and so we’ll just keep watching for the signs of spring, then we’ll believe. Edith Pipe and Harvey Shaw are sad this week as they cope with the idea that brother Jack has passed away. Growing up and then aging together is a privilege. Being part of a family is a good thing and when something like illness and death comes, it affects everyone. Copingtakes its toll, as life goes on. Theraw grief of death remains inside allthose close to the person who died.Time helps a little. So be aware of all those around us who are grieving and be kind. Soup and More 2 continues every Friday at the Presbyterian Church from 11:30 to 1 p.m. It’s a pleasant place to share a meal and meet new folk. Come and bring a neighbour and taste all the good things the many volunteers make under the guidance of Elaine Armstrong and Mary Douma. Dale and Don Chesher are smiling with relief as they celebrate thenewest granddaughter in their lives.Norway is a long way from here, butwhen babies arrive, distanceshortens and love flows just the same. Valentine’s Day is a national holiday on this property and so it’s celebrated to the hilt. We all have our favourite things to celebrate and I’m encouraging you to get the flowers ordered and the plans made for next Monday. It’s a better way than Groundhog Day to make a winter break. Enjoy the week. Bye now, Betty G.W. At the Branch Twenty events make Legion busy this month By Jo-Ann McDonald February has begun and the Brussels Legion Branch has nearly 20 events planned for the month. This week there were the cadets, darts, supper and euchre. The Thursday night darts had 14 darters taking aim at the board. Winners were: first, Penny Reynolds and Ron Schmidt; second, tied, Daisy Wong and Glenn Zehr; high shot, Ron, 140. It is satisfying for Daisy and Glenn to finish second for the evening, especially after suffering the second skunk of the year during the night’s play. The Friday night supper of roast pork was very well attended. This week will be roast beef. The Saturday afternoon euchre had over 10 tables of players hoping to go home with the prize money. Winners were: first, Bev Hayden and Mary McIntosh, 85; second, Tom and Eileen Sloan, 78; third, Bill and Faye Albert, 70; low, Hazel McGonigle and Helen, 39; lone hand, tied, George and Deanna Bacon. Euchre is every two weeks. There was no Sunday night dance as the Super Bowl was being fought out between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers and took precedence. The Branch has two teams heading to District Double Darts in Waterloo soon. Comrades Andy Adams and Eric Ross finished second in the zone competition and Daisy Wong and Ron Schmidt finished within the top 10 to advance to district play. Congratulations and good luck to both teams. We are two-thirds of the way through the Legion year. The Branch will be looking for Comrades to set up and take an active interest in the running of the Branch. Serving on the executive is normally a two-year term and Comrades hopefully would become involved with a committee. If there are any Comrades who would be willing to commit to serving the Branch, please call the Branch for more information. 439 Turnberry St., Brussels www.solacespa.ca 519-887-9682 February is for Sweethearts! (Shawn Loughlin photo) The 2011 edition of The Citizen’s bridal issue will have something different: a chance for bridal couples of the past year to tell the story of their wedding. “We hope that in future The Bridal Parade will be a commemorative issue of most of the weddings that have taken place in the area during the previous year,” said Citizen publisher Keith Roulston, “in the same way that our Babies of the Year has become a permanent record of most of the babies born in the previous year.” The Bridal Parade offers more than a mere opportunity for an announcement of the wedding. Bridal couples or their families are invited to submit a photo and a story of up to 300 words about the wedding. For those who don’t wish to do the write-up themselves, a question form is available from either the Brussels or Blyth office and Citizen staff will write the story. Cost of inclusion is just $25 paid in advance. The story and photo will also appear on The Citizen’s bridal website Brides in Huron (www.northhuron.on.ca) free of charge. Up to two additional photos can be included on the website. “For couples it’s an opportunity to have details of their wedding recorded so memories won’t fade,” said Roulston, “and also share those memories online with distant friends and relatives who couldn’t attend the wedding.” Deadline for submission in this year’s Bridal Parade is Feb. 18. ‘The Citizen’ seeks bridal stories
