The chimney fire spread into the wall of the home causing damage but there was no damage to personal property. Fire trucksarrived at approximately 5:45 p.m.lining both sides of Goderich Street. All departments left before 8 p.m.Auburn has seen its share of loss recently with the death of Roely Verburg at Christmas time, George Collins, formerly of Auburn on Jan. 14 and the passing of Clara Brindley on Jan. 20, formerly of Colborne Township and grandmother to the Moss family. It is with sad heartsthat we say goodbye to these veryimportant people in our lives. On a happier note, the villagewelcomes Natalie Sophia Thomson, newest daughter of Matt and Erin and a little sister for Cara. Cara had mixed feelings about whether she would prefer a brother or sister but is very happy with a little sister to dote on. NEWS FROM AUBURN Get breaking farm news on the Rural Voice section of our website at www.northhuron.on.ca Chimney fire brings twelve fire trucks to Auburn ACW to standardize water rates across township ACW Township council decided to standardize its water costs across all of their different water systems in an attempt to make sure funds are available for potential capital costs at their Jan. 18 meeting. ACW has had this suggestion before, but turned it down due to several water systems having been recently implemented and still being levied against their users. With all the water systems operating, and most of them completely paid off, ACW councillors decided to switch to a flat rate across the township, and gradually increase the fees over several years. The annual increase for the forseeable future will be 7.075 per cent per annum, with the flat rate starting at $512. This flat rate represents an increase for customers in Huron Sands, Amberley, un-metered Lucknow, Dungannon, Benmiller Heights and the Foresters. Century Heights and Maitlandview Estates will initially pay less than they are now. Amish windows a go After formerly addressing ACW council, an Amish community in the township spoke to the Building Code Commission about windows. The Building Code calls for Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved windows, however, the Amish community builds their own homes and windows, and having to replace their windows would have been problematic for their culture, according to representatives of the Amish community. With the support of council, the Amish spoke to the committee, who agreed to allowing the community to produce and install “single pane storm windows sealed with weatherstripping over [their normal] wood framed, single pane operable window[s]”. The result please council. “[The ruling] means they can build their own window, which is not CSA approved,” Van Diepenbeek stated. Councillor Doug Miller stated that he was content with the result, but unhappy with the findings. “It’s disappointing that this scientific question is being given a political answer.”
