It was a pretty good week in terms
of weather. The extreme cold moved
on and some milder but damper
weather arrived. Many folks thought
they felt chilled by the dampness
and the snow that arrived was a
slippery, sugary snow. It was hard to
walk in and heavy to shovel. The
bright side to all of this is that
hopefully the winter is almost over.
Groundhog Day and Wiarton Willie
will have made the prediction of an
early spring or six more weeks of
winter by press time, so we can hope
for the early spring.
The January birthday party for the
coffee girls was held last week at
J.R.’s. There were about 19 ladies
gathered to celebrate the birthdays
of Sarah Stephenson, Sandra Cable
and Leona Armstrong. Happy
birthday girls.
We are happy to hear that Brian
Armstrong is home from hospital.
Isabel tells me that it was something
very strange that afflicted Brian, but
he is coming along nicely.
We are also pleased to report that
Bob Cunningham is now in Listowel
Hospital recuperating from his heart
surgery.
Kathleen Semple has been
admitted to hospital and our prayers
are with her and her family.
Alice Marks has had a brief stay in
hospital and is feeling better.
Then we have Jack Knight. Our
good friend Jack has been unlucky
again. He was working in the
workshop on the farm and tripped
over a cord. Falling caused a heavy
tank to come down on his leg and he
has broken both bones in his lower
leg. He was alone, but he managed
to drag himself to his vehicle, get in,
and drive himself back to Donna.
Jack was sent to London where he
underwent surgery and a rod was put
in his leg. He is coming along very
well and is supposed to be home in
about a week, maybe. Our get-well
wishes go out to Jack.
Our condolences to the Ives
family on the loss of wife and
mother, Jean Ives. Sympathies are
extended to husband Donald and to
children Ken (Bird) and Hugh and
their families.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had 22
players out for a night of fun. Gayle
Speiran captured high lady with 133and Dave Rapson and FrankWorkman share a score of 145 each.Good darting folks. Our daughter Kelly and herhusband Adam have returned fromtheir month-long honeymoon in
Europe. They returned the night
before the funeral for Grandma
Leona McDonald, so not the
happiest of returns. We contacted the
couple the night before their return,
so not to ruin their last days away. I
will begin to give highlights of their
trip next week.
Chris and Judy Lee have returned
from a week’s vacation in Florida.
They had the opportunity to stay at a
friend’s home at the Maple Leaf
Golf Community at Charlotte
Harbour, near Port Charlotte. They
flew from Niagara Falls, New York
to Punta Gorda. The home was
beautiful as was the entire area.
Many Ontario snowbirds spend the
winter in that area and Chris and
Judy had dinner one evening with
Paul and Mary Carroll, formerly of
Seaforth.
The community had many
amenities to enjoy including golf,
four pools, hot tubs, bocci ball and
miniature golf. The weather temps
ranged from 65 – 75 degrees, the
perfect temperatures for the Lees
and better than here. They had the
use of a car and enjoyed a drive
around the very interesting area. They arrived home Friday eveningand the closer they got to the Waltonarea, the more snow was falling.Fred and Heidi McClure have alsoreturned from a week’s vacation, butfrom a much warmer climate. They
enjoyed a week away on Santa
Maria Island off the coast of Cuba.
They went with friends from the
Mitchell and Stratford area. They
had a couple of days of light rain and
then had nice weather. It was a nice
resort and they enjoyed a great time
with their friends.
The Walton Hall was the venue for
the Walton community birthday
party. Members of the Walton
community plus a few friends
gathered on Saturday evening for a
potluck meal and fun. The party was
arranged by B.J. DeJong and many
arrived to enjoy the evening.
The Brussels Women’s Institute
members are busy quilting a quilt at
the home of friend Jean Bewley. The
ladies come and go during the day
and a member of the Institute
delivers lunch for them to enjoy.
There are many ladies from the
community that use their talents of
quilting for the betterment of the
Institute and they have a fun time
doing it.
The service at Duff’s United
Church was held in the basement
this week with Gloria Wilbee
leading the service. She welcomedeveryone and the only birthdayannouncement was for Mark Wilbee. The announcements included thatthe annual reports are available nowand Gloria thanked Monique Baanfor all her work in preparing the
reports. The Annual meeting will be
held on Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the
church basement. All members are
urged to attend. A financial audit has
been completed and the year-end ran
a deficit. Expenses rise each year
and the givings do not.
Jeff and Sarah Grobbink returned
from a wonderful 10-day vacation in
Jamaica. It is always nice to have a
getaway for the parents, but it is also
nice for the children to have special
holiday times with grandparents.
Lily and Jack report that it was
really fun to stay with her Nan and
with Opa and Oma Grobbink while
mom and dad were away.
Don and Pat Dalton have returned
from a week’s holiday in Costa Rica.
They were away with Jim and Betty
Ross of Whitechurch. They flew to
Costa Rica and landed at Liberia and
then went by bus 13 kilometres on
rough road to their resort. The resort
is only three years old and very nice.
They had great weather with no rain.
They went on a river tour and saw
many of the tropical animals such as
crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys and
parrots. It is always nice to go away,
but it is nice to come home again. The last couple of days of Januaryhave Chris Ryan, James Blake, MarkWilbee, Brian Traviss and DaveWatson celebrating birthdays.Kicking off February are ThysDeJong, Sarah Mitchell, Elgin
Schade, Brian Williamson, Amy
Shortreed White, Marilyn
McDonald, Mike Durrell, John
Driscoll, Pamela Hackwell and
Sherri Bachert. Happy birthday to
all.
Guild
holds
potluck
A potluck supper was enjoyed by
nine members of the Melville Guild
and WMS on Jan. 18 followed by
the regular meeting.
The meeting was opened by all
repeating the WMS Purpose. Leona
Armstrong read “A New Year’s
Meditation” and the hymn,
“Standing at the Portal” was
sung. Mrs. Armstrong led in prayer
and the scripture Ephesians
4: 25-31 and 25: 1&2 were read.
Mary Douma presented the topic “A
New Year’s Message”. The
hymn, “All the Way My Saviour
Leads Me” was sung followed by
prayer to close this part of the
