Muriel Coultes welcomed
everyone and Rev. Tom Murray said
grace before several UCW members
and friends enjoyed a delicious
potluck dinner on Thursday, Jan. 27.
Donna Shaw and Mrs. Coultes
opened the meeting with worship on
the theme: What Does the Lord
Require of You. The meditation was
a story of a man who experienced
worship in Brazil and then was taken
out into the countryside, which
helped change his life when he
returned home.
Nancy Folkard introduced Mrs.
Kim Coultes who, with her husband
Paul and 43 others, had gone to
Nicaragua and Grenada with
doctors, nurses, dentists and a
pediatrician. They had taken 44
hockey bags full of supplies,
medicines, two wheelchairs, walkers
and splints. They set up a clinic each
day they were there, and treated well
over 250 patients a day. They carried
out fluoride treatments each day on
the children. Her slides showed the
conditions they had to work with,
which sometimes meant they took
over a school to do their clinics in.
Long lines of people were seen
waiting to be helped. Mrs. Folkard
thanked her for her talk.
During the business, it was carried
that a donation be given to Nancy
Jardin and her family for the Walk
for Memories that they were to take
part in. It was also announced that
Barbara Harper had agreed to
become the treasurer, with the help
of Barbara Anderson who has been
the treasurer for a good many years.
The president’s position will be
filled with individual members each
taking charge of a meeting.
Announcements were made about
the UCW Huron Perth Presbyterial
Annual meeting in Londesborough
on Monday, Jan. 31. The UCW will
be preparing a family turkey dinner
on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. A
limited number of tickets will be
sold and you can contact Nancy
Folkard for yours.
It was announced that the UCW
will be making beef pies on Tuesday,
Feb. 8 and Wednesday, Feb. 9 and
help is needed for both days. Pies
will be ready for pickup at noon on
Wednesday. Contact Barbara
Anderson with your order.
The meeting closed with the
United Church Women’s
benediction.
Pat Hunking greeted worshippers
and handed out the Service of
Worship at Knox United Church on
Jan. 20 Epiphany 4.
Rev. Tom Murray welcomed the
congregation. The call to worship
was read responsively and Rev.
Murray lit the Christ Candle.
The Song of Epiphany’s Call,
which the congregation sang was,
“Will You Come And See the
Light?” “Hear Us, Oh Father” was
the choir anthem that the senior choir
sang accompanied by Elizabeth
Procter. God’s word was heard from
Psalm 112 reading responsively and
Corinthians 2: 1-5 from the New
International Version.
The hymn of praise and
thanksgiving was “Hope of the
World”. The gospel word was heard
from Matthew 5. God’s Word to Us
was entitled, “Seek To Be Light,
Not a Star.”
Jesus calls us to be lamps of the
world. Let us be concerned for one
another and help one another to
show love and do good. The role of a
Christian is to be a lamplighter. The
eternal flame is always available to
us. The light of Christ is in each one
of us. Each one of us is fully
qualified. We need to see to be a light
and not a star.
Joan and Neil Vincent took up the
offering which was dedicated. The
Lord’s Prayer was repeated in
unison. It was the prayer that Jesus
taught his disciples. “There’s a Spirit
in the Air” was the closing hymn.
The commissioning was read
responsively. The choral blessing,
“Go Now in Peace” concluded the
morning worship service.
The annual general meeting,
followed by potluck lunch, followed
in the church basement.

My Church?” at Rev. Tom Murray’s

introduction to the novel and setting
