Saugeen Maitland Midgets win
final five games to take first
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning clinched first place in
Lower Lakes League regular play
this weekend. The Lightning went
undefeated in their final five games
and had league record of 15 wins,
four losses and three ties to finish
two points ahead of Sarnia and
Bluewater.
On Saturday, the Lightning had to
score two third-period goals to come
from behind to beat the Kitchener
Rangers 2-1. Rookie Brittany
Butcher tallied a pair of assists while
Marcie Landman and Hannah
Davidson had the third-period goals
in the winning effort. Also picking
up assists were Brooklyn Irwin and
Georgia Ottewell. The first-place
Lightning will now face eighth-place
Windsor in the opening round of the
league playoffs.
Next weekend, the Bolts head to
Sarnia for the International Silver
Stick Tournament.
Bantam AA Lightning finish 2nd
The Saugeen Maitland Bantam A
girls finished off their regular season
this past weekend. After starting off
the season slowly, the girls had a
very strong second half and finished
the season tied for second place.
Last weekend the girls travelled to
Aylmer to take on the Belmont
Blazers. In the first game, the girls
jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair
of goals from Tori Terpstra
(Atwood), with assists going to
Jordyn Sholdice (Brussels) and
Regan Kaufman (Durham).
The Blazers came back with two
quick goals to tie the game. Despite
a great effort from the girls, they
could not find the back of the net
again and had to settle for a 2-2 tie.
In the second game, the Blazers
were not that fortunate. Again the
Lightning opened the scoring with
Tori Harshman (Owen Sound)
finding the back of the net with
helpers going to Terpstra and
Sholdice. After the Blazers tied the
game, Ally Spielmacher (Durham)
buried Kaufman’s rebound to restore
the lead. Once again the Blazers tied
the game, but Harshman scored her
second goal of the game to take the
lead for good, set up by Cassidy
Mason (Owen Sound). Tailor
MacDonald set up Mason for a late
insurance marker to seal the victory.
On Sunday the girls faced the
Cambridge RoadRunners, but came
out on the wrong end of a 2-1 score.
Mason scored the lone goal, with
assists going to Terpstra and
Kaufman. That loss meant the girls
finished tied for second place with
the London Devilettes. The girls will
take on the Bluewater Hawks in the
first round of the Lower Lakes
Female Hockey League.
Lightning blank Devils
Michela Stutzki recorded her
second consecutive shutout as the
Saugeen Maitland AA Lightning
beat the London Devilettes 3-0 in a
midweek match in Lower Lakes
League play.
Exceptional play by the Lightning
defence limited London to only 19
shots on goal.
Dollee Meigs had a two-point
night with a goal and an assist while
Gina Murray and Nicole Marriage
also scored. Adding assists were
Brittany Butcher and Laken Smith.
With one game remaining, the
Lightning have bolted into first place
with a record of 14 wins, four losses
and three ties. Saugeen will play
their final league game this Saturday
at 5 p.m. in Howick against the
Kitchener Rangers.
