The bonspiel season got off to a
great start at the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club.
On Saturday, Jan. 29 the country
men-spiel was held with 16 strong
teams competing in some very close
entertaining action. Winners were:
first draw, Niel Edgar, Calvin
Ruttan, Jeff Dickson and Cam Cook;
second, Robert Grein with his
brother Don Grein, Steve Burke and
Robert Gagnon. Team Edgar
narrowly edge out Grein for overall
winner of the JR Coultes Bull
Trophy. Bonspiel organizers Marg
Moffat and Ross Peacock did a
fantastic job as always putting this
successful day in place. Sylvia
Pewtress, with the help of volunteers
Linda Meier and Tinaka
Heatherington, served the hungry
curlers two terrific meals.
On Monday, Jan. 24 in regular
weekly curling action skips picking
up wins were Irving Elliott, Barry
Simpson, Bruce Robertson, Ross
Ludington, John Mann and Mac
Inglis. Monday night, Bob Foxton
and John Nixon helped curl their
teams to wins.
The Tuesday ladies saw the Elston
sisters, Leanne and Emily, again
come away with victories as well as
Carol Horton and Sandra Morrison.
Tuesday competitive league winning
teams were Earl Fitch, Robert
Middleton and Bill Devos.
Wednesday mixed teams going
home with wins were Karen Burke,
Robert Grein and Middleton.
Thursday daytime teams with
wins were Bill Tolton, Hugh
Clugston, Wendall Stamper, Bruce
Robertson, Ross Ludington and
Stewart Leedham.
In Thursday Family League play
Bill McDonald, Mike Cottrill,
Kabrina Bishop and Cam Alton
teams came away victorious. The
Belgrave League winners were Mike
Metske, Bob Sinclair, Dave Linton
and Jim Scott. Friday skips Barry
Simpson, Lynn Hickey and Wayne
Horton led their teams to wins.
The bonspiel action gets back
underway with the Sweetheart Spiel
on Feb. 12-13.
This is a great fun event and the
club needs your help putting teams
together. If interested give Bruce a
call at the pro shop.
OUT OF THE HACK NEWS
The management of the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club again would
like to thank “super” volunteers
Ross Peacock and Marg Moffat who
year after year do a stellar job and
put in many hours to make the
bonspiels a success.
Thanks also to Linda and Sylvia
who stepped up to the plate in the
kitchen. The great volunteers we
have will definitely help the club be
successful.

Brussels Novice LL finish
season with 2.0 win ratio
The Brussels Novice Local
League Bulls won two out of three
games last weekend to finish the
regular season with a record of 12-6.
Friday night’s game saw Blyth
come to town. Blyth opened the
scoring in the first period, but
Brussels shut them down after that.
Cole Zwep led the charge with two
goals in the second period with
assists from Devin Johnston, Logan
Long and Bridge and a third goal
unassisted in the third period to
complete his hattrick.
Brussels was on fire on Saturday
as they took Seaforth 8-2. Goals
were scored by Zwep with five, Ben
Jacklin, Long and Devin Bridge.
Assists went to Cole, Simon
Johnston, Abby Strome and Albert
Cardiff.
Offence for these games was
provided by Emma Hruska, Simon
Johnston, Devin Johnston, Long,
Andon Piper, Tommy Warner and
Jacklin. Zwep, Strome, Bridge and
Cardiff were strong on defence. Joe
Jacklin had outstanding games in
net.
On Sunday, the weekend caught
up with the team as they were
unable to score against a strong
Mitchell team despite several
breakaways. They played a great
defensive game, managing to keep
the league-leading Mitchell team’s
scoring down to three goals. Bridge
made some great saves in net for this
game.
The Brussels Novice Rep Bulls
hosted Wingham on Jan. 19. After a
2-0 first period for Wingham,
Brussels back came and scored two
quick goals in the second period, to
tie it up.
Brussels being down one goal
going into the third period, put the
pressure on and scored one more.
Wingham scored two more in the
third to come out on top with the
win.
Scoring for Brussels were Wade
Machan assisted by Tom Warner,
Myles Johnston with two, assisted
by Allison Stevenson and Claire
Mitchell. Cole Zwep played a solid
game in net.
Wingham visits Brussels
Brianne Wheeler, a Brussels-area
resident playing hockey at Colby
College in Maine, has been keeping
her team, in their games.
Wheeler, who has played 16 of the
Colby Mules’ 19 games this season
is maintaining a save percentage of
93.8, having saved 436 of 465 shots.
Recently Wheeler played well in
back-to-back games against the
defending national champions
Amherst College.
The Mules fell in the two games,
3-2 and 3-1, but Wheeler held them
in the game.
In previous action, Wheeler
tended net while the Mules upset
Trinity College earlier in January
and earned her third shutout off the
season with 27 saves.

February, where they will have a chance to advance to the
national championships. From left: Candace Nivins, Laura
