Stafford pled not guilty to the charge and opted for the matter to got to a trial, employing the services of defense attorney William Mathers. It was the cross-examination of crown attorney Teresa Donnelly, however, that produced testimony from Stafford which Judge R.G.E. Hunter said he didn’t believe and made Stafford incredible. Several witnesses were presented to Hunter by Donnelly that established where Stafford was before he fled police on the evening of Jan. 13, 2010. These accounts proved to be the difference, as Stafford was never officially apprehended by police as the chase was eventually called off by the pursuing officer, Const. Jamie Leslie of Wingham Police Service in the interest of public safety. Leslie testified that he had seen a black Chevrolet Camaro parked in front of The Anchor Pub in Wingham for several hours and had made a mental note to “keep an eye out” for the car later in the night in order to check the sobriety of the driver. Sure enough, later that night while on general patrol, Leslie observed the Camaro being driven around Wingham. He said he had to execute a u-turn in order to catch up with the vehicle and by the time he had done so, the vehicle was unoccupied and parked in the Mac’s Milk/Coffee Culture parking lot. Once the occupants (several witnesses testified to seeing two people in the car) returned to the car and began to drive north on Josephine Street towards Teeswater, Continued from page 1 don’t have the same level of protection as before, and we decided that for financial reasons,” he said. “I can’t argue with them in good conscience. We thought we were okay, but the protection isn’t the same.” Councillor Roger Watt, who was not a member of council when the original decisions were made, said he would like to see council take another look at the proposal. Deputy Reeve Neil Rintoul wanted to wait until the new fire building at the Emergency Services Training Centre in Blyth was completed, but was out-voted. “I want to see Blyth as first response, I want to see them called first regardless of the building,” Millian stated. “The sooner we can set this up the better.” Millian went on to state that the amount of work that went into the current system, while important, shouldn’t be considered in the decision making process. “It is unfortunate that, after all the work we did, we found out that it wasn’t the same level of protection,” he said. “We had extra meetings, and did extra work, and we honestly felt that we had done the right thing, but the more information you learn, and the more people we had come forward, the more apparent it became we didn’t know where we really were. “We should have just given them the money and stayed where we were,” Millian said. The proposal will be reviewed at the Feb. 1 meeting. M-T man loses Wingham trial ACW brings fire agreement back Continued on page 18
