Blyth/Brussels Atom Girls bounce back from tourney
During the Christmas break, the
Blyth/Brussels Atom Girls played
three games in the Milverton
Holiday Challenge.
The girls were handed three
straight losses in the round-robin
play, meeting up against Waterloo,
Zorra and Milverton.
The lone goal scored in the
tourney came from centre Sarah
Strome.
The girls headed back to league
play a lot stronger, recording two
ties and one win.
The first game was in Durham on
Jan. 2. This game resulted in a 2-2
tie.
Scoring her first goal of the season
was Jasmine Vader with a shot from
the blue line. The second goal was
scored by Strome, assisted by Alicia
Ireland. Clarissa Gordon stepped up
to play an impressive game in net,
keeping Durham from scoring any
more goals.
The team travelled a long way to
Desboro on Jan. 9 to meet up against
TCDMHA Rebels.
The girls played well and stayed in
the game, despite the first goal going
to TCDMHA 36 seconds into play.
In the second period the girls lit up
the scoreboard twice with goals from
Morgan Willie and Dana Dolmage,
both unassisted.
Halfway through the third period,
the Rebels tied up the game, which
would be the last of the scoring.
Julia Beaven turned away several
shots on net.
On Jan. 16 the girls hosted the
Mount Forest Rams in Brussels. The
first period went quickly with equal
play in both ends. The team wasn’t
able to put in any goals until the
second period.
The first goal was credited to first-
year player Kayla Gauthier. The
team was excited for her first goal.
Assists on the goal went to
Brookelyn Johnston and Dolmage.
Strome netted the second goal, with
assists from Willie and Dolmage.
Beaven was credited with the
shutout.
What a great game, after a nearly-
full season of 14 games played and
14 games lost, the Blyth Novice
Local League were on fire Saturday.
Zurich opened the scoring 12
minutes into the first period, but
Blyth tied it up with less than a
minute to go in the first period with
Cole Pollard’s first goal of the
season with an assist from Sam
Sparling.
In the second period, Blyth came
out swinging with a great goal from
Kessler Jardin with assists from
Reid Button and Marissa Nesbitt.
Zurich quickly retaliated with two
goals in the second and third
periods. But the Bulldogs were not
ready to lose this one and with seven
minutes to go until the end of the
game – and to the thunderous roar of
all the parents and fans – Kennedy
Huether scored her first goal of the
season, with the assist going to
Austin Ireland for the final score 3-
3.
These guys and gals gave us the
best game of the season and came
out with their first point on the chart
to show for it.

14-game losing streak
Thanks for the boost
The Brussels Bantam Bulls received a generous donation from Scotiabank just before their
weekly practice session on Jan. 17. Representing Scotiabank were Louise Mullins and Geoff
Ramalho along with coach Brian TenPas and the rest of the team. (Vicky Bremner photo)

Saugeen Maitland Bantams split games
The Saugeen Maitland Bantam
AA Lightning hosted both Stratford
and Waterloo last week.
The girls played Stratford first.
The game started out slow and at the
second period break, the score was
tied at one.
The girls were able to score three
more times to come away with the
win.
Goals were scored by Lexi Smith,
Kaitlyn Soers, Shannon O’Reilly
and Hailey Herman. Shae Tiley
played well in the Saugeen Maitland
net.
The girls then played Waterloo,
powering out more shots than their
opposition, but coming away with a
3-2 loss.
The Saugeen Maitland coach said
the girls were short on “puck luck”.
Goals were scored by Abbi Hertel
and Taylor Weber with assists from
Smith and Hailey Duplantis.
The girls also tried their “puck
luck” in a tournament from Jan. 7-9
in Guelph, coming away with silver.
The girls played their first game
against Stoney Creek. They started
slowly with the game ending tied at
one.
In the second game the girls
played against Etobicoke, winning
by a score of 3-1. Goals were scored
by Soers, Herman and Weber, with
assists from Ceara Clark, Holly
Nelson and O’Reilly.
The girls played against London in
their third game. It was a rough
game with the winner advancing.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Weber scored the lone Saugeen
Maitland goal with Smith assisting.
The Lightning had one more point
than London, which allowed them to
advance to the finals against
Kitchener-Waterloo.
The girls found themselves down
two goals, eventually losing by a
score of 3-0.
Duplantis played all of the
tournament games in the Saugeen
Maitland net, providing a solid
backstop for the team.
