It has been a difficult week for us
in Walton as our family has suffered
the loss of a loved one. A long-time
Walton resident, Leona McDonald
passed away this week. She hadbeen in hospital since mid-November and after a courageousstruggle, quietly slept away. Leona
was the mother of Neil, Karin and
my husband Rick McDonald. She
had lived in Walton since 1947 and
married Ken McDonald in October
of 1950 and began her life as a
farmer’s wife and then mother of
three. She was an active member of
the community being a Charter
member of the Walton Women’s
Institute, Duff’s United Church
Board, U.C.W. and choir, Walton
Hall Board, Seaforth Hospital
Board, Brussels Fair Board andBrussels Legion. She enjoyedknitting, hockey, baseball, readingand meeting with the various folks at
the Walton, Brussels and Seaforth
coffee shops. Leona was a hard
worker, would be outspoken and
noisy and not always right, but she
should be remembered for her
boisterous laugh and her support of
her family, friends and community.
The Walton Hall was the venue for
the surprise birthday party for Gary
Souch. His friends and family
gathered and it was not until his
arrival and the recognition of many
of the vehicles, that he suspected the
gathering was for him. They had a
great night of fun, laughter and food
to celebrate his “you guess”
birthday. Happy birthday Gary.
The Cranbrook Dart Club
gathered on Jan. 19 with 21 players
aiming at the boards. Teuni Smith
ended high with a score of 97 andNathan Klingengerg with a 120.Some of the club players have beendown and out with flu, cold etc. and
hopefully all the players are back to
good health again and ready to get
out for some good competition and
fun.
Our area hospitals still have many
of our Walton/Brussels folks as
patients. The Clinton Hospital has
Kathleen Williamson and Gerald
Watson and Listowel Hospital has
Jean Evans and Bob Cunningham as
patients.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week included Marie Coutts, Henry
Grobbink, Kaitlin Richie, Leona
Armstrong, Helen Duncan,
Brandon McGavin, Helen
Williamson, Scott Bromley, Brenda
McIntosh, Ryan Jacklin and Sheldon
Lee.
Happy Birthday to all.

FROM WALTON
WI welcomes artists,
riders to meetings
By Bev Craddock
The Majestic Women’s Institute
has been very busy over the winter
with shut-in boxes, a Huronlea
birthday party and donations to the
food bank, Ag-Water Festival,
Women’s Shelter, Town and
Country Services and planning soup
and sandwich lunches and card
parties.
On Jan. 12, the Women’s Institute
met at Cinnamon Jim’s. Thirteen
members and one guest met for a
delicious lunch. Afterwards
everyone went to the basement of
the Brussels Library for a quick
business meeting. Olivia introduced
Dale Sauve, a local artist who works
with wood and scroll work.
In a matter of a minute he took a
small twig and made some small
slices in the twig and presented a
wooden flower. His specialty is fan-
carving, he is one of only a handful
of people in North American still
carving this way, with a small block
of white cedar, a few cuts here and a
bunch of slices later a hummingbird
appears like magic with open fan
wings and tail on a three-
dimensional body. He also showed
us scroll saw-work picture frames,
baskets and jewellery boxes.
You can see his work at local craft
shows or call him at home. The
second guest speakers were
Ashleigh and Jennifer from the
Regional Equine Agriculture Centre
of Huron, also known as REACH,
an education centre for equine and
agricultural programs in Clinton.
They offer adult and youth services
recreational riding lessons and day
camps offering riding, cooking and
archery. They also do weddings and
birthday parties. So much
information, best to check out their
website: www.reachhuron.ca.
The next meeting is on Feb. 9 at
the Brussels Library.
Talk to us
instead.
