BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Jan. 23
was Lori Brooks. Ushering were
Laurie Sparling, Rob Mason and
Terry Richmond. Floyd Herman was
music director.
Rev. Gary Clark drew everyone’s
attention to the announcements in
the bulletin with special attention to
the ladies making beef pies on Feb. 2
and turkey pies on Feb. 16 and to the
UCW 44th annual meeting onMonday, Jan. 31 in Londesboroughwith registration at 9 a.m.The first hymn was “God, WhoseLove is Reigning O’er Us”. The callto worship was repeatedresponsively. The choral response,
“Glory to God in the Highest” was
followed by the “Prayer of
Invocation” repeated in unison. The
scripture reading was from Genesis
18: 1-15.
The children were asked to come
to the front for their story time.
Candice Abell-Rinn lit the candles at
the front. Rev. Clark asked the
children if they had ever had
anything unbelievable happen to
them. Sometimes the unbelievable
things happen out of fear and then
there are unbelievable things that
happen to us that are good. We can
ask God to help us. God also wants
us to help Him. The children said a
prayer along with the congregation
and went downstairs for their time of
fellowship. The choir favoured the
congregation with the anthem, “’Tis
so Sweet to Trust Jesus”.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was “Believing in the unbelievable”.
The scriptures are often
misunderstood in the story of Sarah
in the scriptures, Sarah takes theblame for not being able to havechildren but Abraham takes noblame. Sarah suffered the most fornot being able to have children. When strangers came along,Abraham invited them to share their
food and shade with them. He asked
Sarah to make bread out of their best
flour. Abraham wanted to use the
best for these strangers.
When the strangers said they
would be back this way in a year’s
time and Sarah would be with child.
Sarah heard them from the tent and
laughed because they were both too
old to have children. Sarah might
have been bitter because she thought
she was too old for having children,
but maybe it was laughter of
joy because she wanted children
even though she and Abraham were
old.
We cannot have the good things inlife unless we get rid of thebitterness. When Sarah andAbraham had a son, they called himIsaac which means “laughter”.We as a people of faith must beready to believe in the unbelievable.
The next hymn, “How Firm a
Foundation” was followed by the
receiving of the offering, the
offertory response, “We Give Thee
But Thine Own”, the prayer of
dedication and of people of the
world and the singing of the Lord’s
Prayer. The last hymn was “He
Leadeth Me”. The commissioning
and benediction was followed by the
choral response, “Sent Forth by
God’s Blessing”. Rev. Clark said the
blessing and everyone was invited
for lunch hosted by the choir. They
are raising funds for the new choir
stoles.

Blyth students talk winter
By Carlene Bremner,
Isaac Nicholson and Eric Steele
Currently, Grade 7/8 students have
been busily preparing and studying
review for their math test. In science,
the class has continued to study pure
substances and mixtures. In
language, the class has just recently
finished a PLC on Open Response
Format questions. The assignments
are graded and marked by a group of
teachers.
Student Council had a meeting on
Tuesday, Jan. 18 to discuss planning
for Valentine’s Day. There will be a
dance and carnations are being sold
for $2 at lunch breaks.
This week in the junior
kindergarten class they were
learning about apples and the
numbers one, two and three. In the
senior kindergarten class they
learned about the letter ‘C’ and how
the letter makes two different
sounds. The class had to sort items
that start with C. They read the book
“Country Mouse and City Mouse”.
This week we did a survey and the
question was “What is your
favourite snow activity?” In senior
kindergarten/junior kindergarten,
Alyssa said her favourite is making a
snowman. Joel in Grade 1/2 likes to
play hockey and Evy from Grade 2/3
enjoys sledding. Mrs. Middleton
likes to throw snowballs. From
Grade 5/6, Nathan has fun skiing
and Justin Grade 6/7 likes
snowboarding. In Grade 7/8
Brandon likes to snowmobile.
Another survey was taken of the
classes in school last week. We
asked “What is your favourite kind
of cookie?” The majority of the
students we asked said chocolate
chip, though there were a few people
that had other preferences. Amy
from Grade 8 said that her favourite
was Macadamia nut. Mrs. Middleton
went so far as to say her favourite
was mocha fudge chocolate chip.
Are you “different”?
From Spurgeon’s sermon, “Regeneration”
God absolutely interposes in the salvation of every man to make him regenerate. In
the salvation of every person there is an actual putting forth of divine power,
whereby the dead sinner is quickened, the unwilling sinner is made willing, the
desperately hard sinner has his conscience made tender; and he who rejected God
and despised Christ, is brought to cast himself down at the feet of Jesus.
There must be a divine interposition, a divine working, a divine influence, or else,
do what you may, without that you perish, and are undone; “for except a man be
born again, he can not see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3
This change is radical -- it gives us new natures, it makes us love what we hated and
hate what we loved, it sets us in a new road; it makes our habits different, it makes
our thoughts different, it makes us different in private, and different in public.
“If any man be in Christ he is a new creature; old things are passed away, behold
all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
