BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED Find a job/Advertise a job on Jobs In Huron at www.northuron.on.ca Gypsy Lane will soon be home to a different kind of seniors dwelling with Legacy Lane Homes development of an eight unit seniors community. Located beside Ostbek Manor, a seniors apartment complex, the build has moved forward after running into several problems with zoning, including complaints from neighbours and storm water management problems due to the height of the land compared to surrounding lots. Owner Bonnie Brak persevered through several hearings with North Huron Township to receive permission to start the build, and recently announced that the first four units will be move in ready in May. “We were looking to be ready for April 1, but due to the problems with the weather, we’re looking at May 1,” she said. The buildings are set to fill a niche market for seniors – those who wish to live in a house without the responsibilities and requirements normally associated with one. Each unit contains all the amenities of a home, including new cooking, cleaning and laundry appliances, and each has its own garage, but work like snow removal and landscaping are taken care of. “We really wanted to make each unit a home, rather than an apartment or condominium,” she said. “We’ve taken extra measures to ensure that future tenants will feel that they have come home.” Brak chose Blyth because it has no seniors housing like this model, and because of the amenities and events close by. “Blyth is close to several centres like Wingham and Goderich and has events that seniors enjoy, like the [Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association’s] Reunion and the Blyth Dog show,” Brak said. In addition, the homes will be close to Blyth’s historic downtown and the many shops and services the village has to offer. The investment is a sound one, according to Brak, because of the number of retiring baby boomers looking for living arrangements with less hassle. “It’s a great housing market to invest in,” she said. For more information or applications, visit the Gypsy Lane site, or visit www.legacylanehomes.com “Visitors are welcome to stop by and check out the progress any time,” Brak said. “We are accepting rental applications already.” By Mikenna Lane This week at St. Anne’s consisted of the usual athletic, club and academic activities. The athletes claimed many victories as the junior girls’ volleyball team dominated over their many competitors, the boys’ hockey team won by an amazing score of 6-0 against Goderich District Collegiate Institute and the swim team also claimed many titles at the Huron-Perth meet on Jan. 13 including the overall girls title. The band ventured to St. Mary’s Elementary School in Goderich to display their musical skills. Habitat for Humanity is seeking new members and they have an awesome line-up of future activities planned. On a special note, on Jan. 12, the students and staff joined together for a prayer service to pay respect and remembrance to those who suffered in the Haiti earthquake disaster which occurred a year ago. Students wrote cards of encouragement to their friends at the Father Wasson Centre in Haiti, an organization that they contacted through prayers and financial donations. Students in our Grade 10 French Immersion Religion class and the school’s Me-to-We group put forth a tremendous amount of effort into the assembly. Their motivating video, prayers and details regarding the tragedy influenced students and staffs members to appreciate all that we have in Canada and it helped remind students of their responsibility to those who are in need. The school will now be entering into the world of Quiet Week, where students prepare for final assessments and exam preparation. As final assessments and exams approach, students will be hard at work studying and working on projects that will determine a large portion of their final grades. Quiet week begins at St. Anne’s By Denny Scott The Citizen Seniors homes should be ready by May
