Saugeen Maitland PeeWees win gold in Guelph
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee A
Lightning travelled to Guelph for the
annual Guelph Thunder Tournament
from Jan. 7-9 and brought
back the gold medal for their
trouble.
The Lightning played its first
game against Markham.
The team started out slow, but they
eventually struck the Markham
goalie five times, while Markham
could only find the back of Monica
Rankin’s net twice.
They then played Whitby in
their second game of the
tournament.
The girls won by a score of 6-0
with plenty of passing and scoring to
speak of.
For the third game, the team’s
confidence was high but two of the
girls came down sick, so it was a
battle against the host team of
Guelph.
Guelph dominated the game,
eventually beating the girls by a
score of 3-2. The pair of
teams, however, would meet
again.
In the semi-finals, the Lightning
took on Sarnia.
It was a tight game with plenty of
back-and-forth action, but it was
Delayna Smith and Jessica Dales
who were able to find the back of the
net.
Saugeen Maitland won the game
by a score of 2-0.
Cassidy Becker held her own in
net, earning the shutout against
Sarnia.
The stage was set for the return
matchup with Guelph in the finals.
The host team was determined, but
the girls were now at full strength
and just as
determined to wear gold around
their necks.
It was a fast-paced game with very
few breaks for penalties.
With two minutes left in the game,
the score was knotted at one and
Neve Vanpelt was able to score the
winning goal.
Goals were scored throughout the
weekend by Morgan Murray, Hanna
Herman, Avery Reeves, Amy
Hepburn, Kaitlyn Eckert and Jessica
Dales. The tournament also
featured great defense by Brie
Becker, Abbi Atkins and Kayla
McCobb.
