The snow on Monday looks like a
sparkling cloth covering the ground.
With little ripples left by the wind,
the blanket of snow running over our
back lawn can only give you pause.
The beauty of nature is an
astounding thing, just how do the
diamonds stick to the trees and
bushes?
The days of January are over half
gone and for any that is a very good
thing. The dark days of winter can
be hard on the mental health. This is
the time to visit and phone, the
human voice is a great reassurance
that life is good.
Once again we need to salute our
municipal staff, and of course the
plow boys for their efficient work at
snow removal. You’ve done a great
job this year of keeping our streets
safe and walkable. Thank you so
much.
It seems to me it was Don
Crawford and Hugh Nichol many
years ago when they were working
for Brussels, who figured out that
getting the snow moved before folks
and their vehicles complicated
things worked pretty well.
Depending on the snowfall, the hour
of rising was set for them and their
dance of truck and blower started
with little interference. This good
information has been passed along
and now several municipalities have
started using this method of snow
removal. So to all the snow men in
our midst, thank you.
One of the visible miracles in my
world is grandchildren. The changes
in features, the rate of growth, the
budding personality to me is routine
miracle each time I set eyes on each
of the wee dears. A visit to Sloan and
Ella in Barrie last week had the
usual moment of awe and wonder.
When age is counted in months, you
know it’s a time of rapid change.
Sloan is four months and Ella is 29
months so things are definitely
happening for Curt and Julie on an
hourly basis I’m sure.
For them it’s a time of low sleep,
confusion, laundry and clutter, for
the grandparents just popping in, it’s
a time of amazement, a time of
change and a time of phenomenal
growth. For everyone it’s a time of
rapid development. A visit to
Listowel’s grandgirls is always fun,
as four, eight and 11-year-olds tell
you how their world is working. A
January romp in the snow and a
game of charades is just the right
thing to keep us up to date on our
lives. So once again the miracle of
children and the amazing
development of youth will sustain
me until our next visit.
So get outside, even for a wee
while, and breath deep. The
snapping cold air will kill the nasty
bugs that can and are causing havoc
each winter.
Enjoy each day.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
