Belgrave resident to play in prospects, all-star gamesBelgrave resident Greg Dodds ishoping that, by this time next year,
he will be preparing to play hockey
for a college team in the United
States.
Dodds, who started playing
hockey for centres like Teeswater,
Blyth and Wingham, was signed to
the St. Mary’s Lincolns last season,
a Junior “B” team, and will be
participating in a prospect game
later this month.
“I was playing for the Wingham
Minor Hockey Association,” Dodds
said. “Then I got a letter in the mail
to go to the St. Mary’s rookie camp.
Unfortunately it got sent to the
wrong address.”
Due to the lost invitation, Dodds
was too late for the rookie camp,
however, the Lincolns invited him
to their regular camp for tryouts.
The organization must have liked
what they saw because Dodds
started playing for the Lincolns
farm team, the Exeter Hawks,
however it wouldn’t be long before
he got the call to start in the Junior
“B” League.
“St. Mary’s starting goalie went
to the Sarnia Sting, so I became
their backup goalie,” Dodds said.
“The starting goalie was struggling
a little, so they put me in to start.”
Dodds then had a concussion and
went back to Exeter, as the Lincolns
had found another goalie from the
Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
The move to the United States
wouldn’t be the first that Dodds has
made for his hockey future. He is
currently being billeted in Exeter,
and, when he isn’t on the ice, he
attends classes at South Huron
District High School in Exeter.
The prospect game, to be held on
Jan. 17 at the Sleemans Centre inGuelph gives scouts from the OHL,colleges and, potentially, theNational Hockey League (NHL) achance to see players in action
against like-calibre players.
Because Dodds is born later in the
year, he is still eligible for the drafts
for the aforementioned leagues.
Dodds is hoping for a scholarship
to a school in the United States, and,
thanks to a sports agency he signed
with, he’s prepared if an offer does
come.
“They told me everything I had to
do, like getting my SATs done and
making an online profile for scouts
with stats and videos of my games,”
Dodds said. “From there, the
agency talks to schools and works
out deals.”
Dodds hopes his scholarship will
offer him the chance to get a degree
in kinesiology so he can be a fitness
trainer or a high school gym
teacher.
Dodd also received good news
last week, stating that he has been
signed to the all-star game for his
conference.
“I’ve been named an alternate
goalie for that,” he said. “I’ll be part
of a lot of all-star games I
guess.”
NEWS
FROM BELGRAVE
By Denny ScottThe Citizen
Florence McArter greeted and
handed out the service of worship at
Knox United Church on Sunday,
Jan. 9.
Rev. Tom Murray welcomed the
congregation. After he lit the Christ
Candle the congregation sang, “On
Jordan’s Bank”. The call to worship
was read responsively. “I Know
Who Holds Tomorrow” was sung by
the senior choir accompanied by
Elizabeth Procter. Psalm 40 was
read responsively.
The Song of Professed Faith was
“Today We All Are Called to Be
Disciples”. The gospel word was
taken from John 1: 29-34.
Rev. Tom Murray’s sermon was
entitled, “Jesus, Born … And
Dwelling Among Us”. This is a
message that begins to reveal to us
what it means when someone says to
us, “It’s time to leave”. What signals
to the world, “move out” urges the
faith community to “move on in”.
We are asked to be disciples in
God’s mission. “let’s get busy and
go out into those fields again and
draw God’s people back.
John Nixon and Doug Walker took
up the offering and it was dedicated.
The Song of Life and Sharing was
“Small Things Count” so Jesus said.
The children and youth shared what
they had learned in Sunday School.
They learned how Jesus can walk on
water and how things sink or float
and that Jesus is really the Son of
God. “I, the Lord of Sea and Sky”
was the Song of Commitment. Our
Mission Life was read responsively.
The choral blessing, “Go Now in
Peace” concluded the worship
service. Elizabeth Procter
accompanied all the hymns. The
flowers at the front of the sanctuary
were placed by the Irwin families in
loving memory of their mother Betty
Irwin.
On Sunday, Jan. 16 at 10:15 a.m.
the Sacrament of Holy Communion
will take place at Knox United
Church.
The community extends sincere
sympathy to Tom Irwin, Murray and
Carol Irwin, Brenda and Wayne
Jones, Colleen Irwin and Mark
Commandant, Lorna and Jim Ryder,
Kevin Irwin, Bruce and Jennie Irwin
and Laura and Dave Roby and
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren in the sudden loss of a
loving mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother.
Betty passed away on Jan.1 at
Wingham and District Hospital and
the funeral service was held at the
McBurney Chapel on Thursday, Jan.
6 with Rev. Tom Murray officiating.
Duane Kuntz of Kitchener passed
away suddenly at his home on
Thursday, Jan. 6 at the age of 40. He
was the son of Betty (Rinn) Kuntz
and dear nephew of Gordon and
Lois Rinn. The community extends
sincere sympathy to the family.
