The curlers returned to action this
past week at the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club. After a busy holiday
season most of the curlers were
happy to hit the ice in 2011. On Jan.
3 the daytime curlers kicked off the
year with 13 new teams starting the
second draw. Winning skips were
Bill Tolton, Irving Elliott, Les Shaw
Ross Luddington, John Mann and
Stewart Leedham.
The Monday night men saw
Wayne Waechter and Doug Miller
skip their teams to victory. The
Tuesday night ladies’ winners were
Kelsie Eadie, Amy Miller and Emily
Elston. Tuesday’s competitive
league skips curling their teams to
wins were Rob Middleton, Aart De
Vos and Shawn Cottrill.
The Wednesday night mixed
league managed to get two games
played while watching the Canada-
Russian hockey game with Karen
Burke and Robert Grein picking up
wins.
Thursday daytime curling saw
Barry Simpson, Les Shaw, Ross
Luddington, Ron McMichael, John
Mann and Mac Inglis come away
with wins. Kelsie Eadie and Amy
Miller skipped their teams to victory
in the Thursday family league and
Mike Metske, Bob Sinclair, Dave
Inglis and Murray Vincent came out
on top in the Belgrave league.
Friday night mixed league action
had Wayne Waechter, Brian Potter
and Bill McDonald curl their teams
to wins.
The management and staff are
looking forward to a busy 2011 and
are starting to gear up to the curling
bonspiel season. These bonspiels
are great fun and take a lot of work
from our busy volunteers. Anyone
willing to put a team together or
help in any way should contact
Bruce at the pro shop, at 519-357-
2179.
OUT OF THE HACK NEWS
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club would like to thank everyone
for a very successful 2010 and are
looking forward to another great
year in 2011.

Machan’s hattrick gives Novices first 2011 win
The Brussels Novice Reps hosted
the BCH Ice Dogs on Jan. 5 and
came up with a loss. Playing a
strong first period, both teams had
chances to score but came up short,
resulting in a scoreless first period.
BCH then scored a pair of goals,
putting Brussels in a 2-0 hole.
Keeping Brussels in the game
were Wade Machan, Myles
Johnston, Jamie Newell, Allison
Stevenson, Claire Mitchell, Carson
Heise and Nathan Brown.
Playing strong defence were Max
Johnston, Ryan Jacklin, John Nesbit
and Blake Porter. Cole Zwep was a
wall of steel by stopping many
shots from sailing through the
pipes.
The team also travelled to
Lucknow last Saturday for a one-
day tournament coming out with a
win and a loss.
Scoring in the first game was
Machan with a hattrick and Johnston
with one. Assisting was Porter.
Brussels won 4-3.
Going into the second game, the
team was pumped and ready to play.
Although they came up with a loss
of 2-1, it was a nail-biter to the very
end of sudden death overtime.
Scoring for Brussels was Johnston
and assisting was Newell.
Cole Zwep was solid in net
making many fantastic saves and
keeping Brussels in the game.
Hot on his heels

Brussels Atoms gear up for playoffs
On Sunday, Jan. 2, the Brussels
Atom Bulls travelled to Monkton
for a Mitchell Meteors’ home game.
The Bulls played well, hustled and
worked hard, but Mitchell was too
strong and ended up with a 9-1
victory. The bright spot was the
only Bull’s goal to get the goose egg
off the board and spoil the Mitchell
shutout when Jack Pipe scored
unassisted with 51 seconds left in
the game.
The play of the kids did not
represent the score, and the coaches
were pleased with the effort shown
in a losing cause.
The next game was a home game
five days later when the Zurich
Thunder rolled into town. The Bulls
got on the board halfway through
the first when Pipe scored
unassisted. The play was back and
forth with chances at both ends, but
the Bulls had the better chances.
With a little over two minutes left
in the second period Noah Terpstra
scored assisted by Nick McArter to
give the Bulls a 2-0 lead into the
third. Zurich finally tallied at the
13-minute mark of the third to get to
within one, but with 8:12
remaining, Pipe scored assisted by
Nolan Johnston to restore the two-
goal lead.
With 1:47 left in the game, Zurich
scored to get the deficit back to one
and pulling the goalie for an extra
attacker became a possibility, but
the Bulls were able to keep the puck
in the Zurich end and then with 31
seconds left Terpstra got the
insurance marker assisted by Pipe
and Jacob Roth to make the final
score 4-2.
Last Sunday afternoon saw the
Seaforth Stars came to town looking
to hand the Bulls another lopsided
loss, however the Bulls had
different ideas.
Seaforth opened the scoring 1:10
into the game but the Bulls soon
replied when Terpstra scored
assisted by Hudson Smith. There
was no scoring in the second as the
Bulls’ Nick McArter and Seaforth’s
goalie kept the shooters at bay.
At the 12:04 mark, Seaforth took
the lead and with chances to tie just
falling short, the Stars were able to
get the insurance marker to seal the
game.
The Bulls have one game
remaining on the schedule before
the OMHA and WOAA playoffs.
On Friday the BCH Ice Dogs come
to town for a 7:30 p.m. game and
then on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
the Bulls travel to Zurich to begin a
six-point series for OMHA quarter-
final playoffs with the second game
in Brussels on Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m.For the second time in the past
month, the Saugeen Maitland
Midget AA Lightning came up a
goal short in the championship
game of a tournament and had to
settle for the silver medal. On the
weekend, the Lightning skated in
the Scarborough Sharks’ 27th
Anniversary Ice Trials Tournament.
In round-robin play, Saugeen
picked up wins against
Peterborough (3-2) and Markham-
Stouffville (2-0) and lost to Toronto
Leaside (1-0). In the gold medal
game, Toronto edged the Lightning
by a 2-1 score. Picking up a shutout
and a stellar 1.25 GAA for the
weekend was goaltender, Chelsea
Houle. Leading the way on the
scoresheet was Laura Irwin with
two goals and an assist. Also
scoring for the Bolts were Sara
Gossell with two, Nicole Marriage
and Marcie Landman while assists
went to Brittany Butcher, Kelly
Garrow and Laura Irwin.
Lightning win playoff game
Kelly Garrow had two points and
Micaela Stutzki had the shutout as
the Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning topped the Stratford Aces
4-0 to take a 1-0 lead in their
Provincial Playoff series earlier this
month.
Scoring for Saugeen were
Brooklyn Irwin with a pair, Laken
Smith and Garrow. Picking up
assists were Brittany Butcher (two),
Abbey Gibson, Gina Murray and
Garrow.
