Over 150 people attended a special meeting of Central Huron Council held in Londesborough to discuss the fire coverage issue. Huron County Council passed a motion to say that it “regretted” the comments made by Warden Bert Dykstra in regards to the North Perth-Huron East ARC proceedings. The comments were construed as favouring urban schools over rural schools, which representatives of Grey Central Public School took as a knock against their school. “You cannot take sides,” said Susan Alexander to Dykstra. “Your job is to work on behalf of both of our schools.” A Wingham couple was found guilty of Conspiracy to Commit Murder after their plot to kill the man’s wife crossed paths with a police officer working undercover as the hitman the couple had “hired”. Members of the Brussels Optimists banded together on May 15 to build a new pavilion at the Brussels Community Park, in addition to renovating the baseball diamond. The project was completed in just one day. A fire in mid-July lead to confusion over fire maps in Auburn and had residents trying to figure out which of four different departments would respond in an emergency. More than a dozen Grey Township residents attended a Huron East Council meeting hoping to hear an apology from Mayor Joe Seili and councillor David Blaney regarding comments they made about Brussels Public School being closed over Grey Central Public School. The group received no apology. Blyth welcomed firefighters for the 109th annual Fire Fighters Association of Ontario convention, which began on July 29. Four contenders stepped forward for the Brussels Ambassador Crown – Morgan Deitner of Ethel, Kasey King of Brussels, Emily Baker of Brussels and Alix Sholdice of Brussels. Deitner was crowned ambassador later in the month. Brussels-area resident Larry Bray died after falling into a grain storage MARY HUETHER Mary Louise (McDonald) Huether of Brussels passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Seaforth Community Hospital on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011. Born in Grey Township on Aug. 27, 1926, Mary was in her 85th year. A former elementary school teacher in Brussels and area, Mary was the beloved wife of the late Murray Ross Huether who predeceased her on April 15, 2005 and will be sadly missed by her children Brian and Dianne Huether of Brussels, Dave and Angela Huether of Brampton, Joy and Roger Tipple of Burlington and Joan and Gary Ritchie of Markham. She was also loved by her grandchildren Sandy Huether and Ken Hopper, Jon and Jocelyne Tipple, Sheri and Jeff Hamilton, Sarah Tipple and Joe Slack, Jeff Huether, Kevin Huether and Michelle Imai, Chris Ritchie and Kaitlin Ritchie, her great-grandchildren Owen, Evan, Lila and Brooke, her sisters- in-law Marie McTaggart, Leona McDonald and Marilyn McDonald and her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Ken and Don McDonald. Friends were received by the family from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home where the funeral was conducted on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. Rev. Elwin Garland of Melville Presbyterian Church officiated. Carrying floral tributes were granddaughters Sandy Huether, Sheri Hamilton, Sarah Tipple and Kaitlin Ritchie. Pallbearers were Ken Hopper, Jeff Hamilton, Jon Tipple, Jeff Huether, Kevin Huether and Chris Ritchie. Spring interment is in Brussels Cemetery. He was in his 83rd year. He was born in Diever, the Netherlands on May 27, 1928. He was the beloved husband of the late Dianne “Diny” Kerssies (2001), loving father of his only daughter Janey Flootman (Harry) and dear brother of Jan (Nely), Janny (Sam - deceased) Elzinga, Henny (John) Tersteege, John (Joyce) and Harry (Jeanette). Also surviving are his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Harm (1972) and Aaltje (1977) Kerssies, son Harry (2003) and brother Henderikus (1958). Friends were received at the Lockhart Funeral Home, 109 Montreal St., Mitchell on Dec. 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service was held at Bethel Free Reformed Church, Mitchell on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. Rev. He was in his 35th year. Brian was the beloved husband of Annette (Lockhart) Terpstra and loving father of Katrina and Cole. He was the son of Nicolaas and Catherine Terpstra and brother of Darryl and Tanya Terpstra, Cheryl and John Wight, Steve and Vanessa Terpstra, Scott Terpstra and Anna- Marie McFalls and Dwayne and Emma Terpstra, all of RR 2, Atwood. He was also loved by his nieces and nephews, Jayden (godson), Clayton, Josyanna, Riley, Kelty and Devyn Terpstra, Kayla and Dylan Terpstra, Cleo and Harmony Wight, and Luke and Owen Terpstra, his Oma Johanna Terpstra of Stratford, Grandma Jean O’Neil of Ilderton, parents-in-law Betty and Bruce Lockhart of Clinton, brother-in-law Craig Lockhart of Toronto and his many aunts and uncles. Visitation was held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Dec. 29 from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus service at 12:15 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Listowel on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. Interment is in St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery, Brussels. She was in her 60th year. She was the beloved wife of Tony Verburg, loving mother and mother- in-law of Raymond and Tonya Verburg of Chatham, Keith and Miriam Verburg of St. Catharines, Michael and Sarah Verburg of Plainswell, Michigan; Angela and Jeroen Oosterom of Gadshill and Julie and Jonathan Hunse of Stratford. She was the special Oma to Nathan, Justine, Katie, Jared, Hannah, Johannes, Micah, Joel, Danielle, Gabriella, Elijah, Jake, Aimee, Lena, Willem and Janelle. She was the beloved daughter of Ralph Lubbers of Auburn and dear sister and sister-in-law of George and Cathy Lubbers of Bradford, Andy Lubbers of Auburn and Jean Lubbers of Brucefield. She was predeceased by her mother Grace Lubbers and by one brother Henry Lubbers.
