Blyth goalie plays first NHL game in 2010 For the first time in The Citizen’s history, the area had two nominees for Junior Citizen of the Year. The first was Teaghan Coultes, a 10-year-old student at East Wawanosh Public School whose goal was “to make others happy” and the second was Brussels resident Brianne Wheeler, who had recently spent two weeks working at an orphanage in Kenya. Blyth’s Janice Henry was presented with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary’s highest honour, the Meritorious Service Award. Both her mother and sister had received the award in the past. Firefighters from Clinton, Goderich and Seaforth spent the better part of a day battling a blaze at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Clinton. No casualties were reported, but the store sustained extensive damage. Despite frigid temperatures, there had been little snowfall and many area snowmobile trails were closed due to the lack of snow. Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was added to the provincial cabinet by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, who named Mitchell Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The Belgrave Kinsmen celebratedthe completion of their arena floorproject at the Belgrave CommunityCentre. The Kinsmen had been working on the project and raising funds for months. The floor was then complete and the ice was ready for skating. Londesborough-area farmer Harvey Hoggart stepped down as the president of the Huron County Beef Producers, passing the position onto Matt McCall. The North Perth-Huron East Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) had been charged with the potential closure of Brussels and Grey Central Public Schools by the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB). Blyth’s Justin Peters played in his first NHL game for the Carolina Hurricanes, making 34 saves and beating the New York Islanders by a score of 3-1. Peters was the first star of the game. Peters fought back tears in his post-game interview, saying that his family being at the game was “pretty special”. The North Perth-Huron East ARC was left with three options at a meeting held at Eastdale Public School. The Huron Pioneer Thresher andHobby Association won the BestCultural Event/Organization Awardat the first annual Huron Cultural Awards, which were held in Blyth. Chris and Ronald Ward were charged in the death of Wingham’s Scott Hayes. Hayes was found in a Wingham parking lot and at the time, the cause of death was undetermined. Students in the Grade 1, 2 and 3 classes at Brussels Public School celebrated their 100th day of school by collecting 100 cans of food for the Salvation Army in Clinton. A fire made its way through the Blyth Corner Café, destroying much of the interior of the restaurant, but North Huron firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it could spread to any adjacent buildings. Wingham OPP officer Vu Pham was shot and killed in a gunfight just north of Winthrop. The incident occurred when Pham attempted to stop a truck when the driver exited his vehicle and began shooting at Pham with a hunting rifle. Eyewitnesses said there were as many as 20 shots fired between the suspect and other responding officers. The North Perth-Huron East ARCapproved two options, the majorityreport and the minority report at ameeting at Elma Township Public School. Both Central Huron and Ashfield- Colborne-Wawanosh Council received the updated figures for fire service from the North Huron Fire Department and began to question the costs. Neither council made a decision, but both were considering other options at the time. A funeral for Pham at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex was attended by thousands of uniformed police officers, in addition to OPP commissioner Julian Fantino and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. The Blyth-Hullett Landfill was slated for closure on May 1 for as long as two years. A Belgrave church group collected over 150 teddy bears to be sent to Haiti as part of the earthquake relief effort. Forty of the bears were collected by the Grade 3/4 class at East Wawanosh Public School alone. The 2009 “Sunshine List” (a list of public servants making over $100,000 per year) was released with 74 AMDSB employees listed.Topping the board’s list wasdirector of education Chuck Reid at$176,022. Also on the list were 27 employees of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, including CEO Andrew Williams, who made $304,912 in 2009. The AMDSB made the recommendation that Brussels Public School be expanded with a four-classroom addition, but converted into a K-6 facility under the proposal with Grade 7 and 8 students being implemented into the F.E. Madill Secondary School campus. After a discussion with local insurance partner Rick Elliott, it was determined that due to fire coverage concerns, insurance rates in outlying areas such as Hullett and Auburn could skyrocket. The Emergency Services Training Centre, just south of Blyth, received $1.5 million in funding from the provincial and federal governments. The funds would go towards upgrades and expansion. The Blyth Festival received a Trillium grant to upgrade its AUTOMOTIVE MOTOR VEHICLE dealers in Ontario MUST be registered with OMVIC.
