Our daughter Kelly’s wedding was on the weekend of Dec. 18 and all our extended family from the west was home. They stayed to celebrate Christmas with everyone and the McDonalds gathered at Karin McDonald Calhoun’s in Bayfield for a Boxing Day celebration. The first time since 1999 that the family of Leona and the late Ken McDonald were all home. There were only five grandchildren, and since then all have added spouses and two great- grandchildren have arrived. The group of 17 enjoyed a wonderful afternoon together but unfortunately, Leona was unable to attend. Family members spent time with her during the day and kept her up to speed with amusing stories and pictures of the day. The westerners have returned to their homes in Calgary and Vancouver, Charlie to North Carolina and Kelly and Adam on their honeymoon to Europe. How quickly things return to normal. The family of Neil and Marie McGavin also gathered for their family Christmas the weekend before Christmas. Bryan and Heather Kelso and family of North Bay along with the area McGavin children, Brian, Jeff and Cathy Melady (Seaforth) and families all gathered for a great time. It was a very full household with about 21 filling every available chair. Neil and Marie attended the Johnston family Christmas at Terry and Teresa Johnston’s the next day. Murray and Ruth McDonald, Duncan and Elizabeth were home to Betty McDonald’s over Christmas. They all went to Waterford to visit family and Betty had a chance to visit with her 99-year-old sister and her 90-year-old sister. The cousins had a great time catching up with each other over the couple of days spent there. Some people like to be away during the Christmas break, but many probably haven’t been to this place. Iqaluit on Baffin Island, is the capital of Nunavut and is located on the inland tip of Frobisher Bay. Jeff and Shannon McGavin, Jake, MacKenzie and Teagan went to visit Shannon’s aunt Jan (Elliott) Riddell and her husband Bill. The family drove to Ottawa to catch their flight to Iqaluit for their five-day visit. They landed at the Iqaluit Airport that Jeff says resembles a large train caboose. They dressed warmly for the trip but were lucky to experience temperatures that were around only - 2°C, although one night it was - 19°C. It can get as cold as -50°C but they were thankful they missed that. Where Jan and Bill live, they can look out and see the water of the Bay. The area claims to have the second highest “high tide” in the world. The water rises 23 feet every night to recede the next morning. It is a very different way of life there. Hunting is a big part of the culture, but the hunting has not been very good so far. There has not been enough ice form to get to what’s known as the flow edge, so fish and seal hunting has not been good. The family enjoyed some different food including moose ox stew, but Jeff thought it tasted a lot like beef. The family enjoyed dinner one night withanother local away from home, Pauland Theresa Glanville and girls. Paulis the son of Lorne and BonnieGlanville and is an RCMP officer. The McGavins returned back toOttawa on Dec. 31 to spend NewYear’s Eve in Ottawa. They expected to see the usual fireworks, but were disappointed when there was no display. Jeff assumes it must be cutbacks by the government. They stayed at the Chateau Laurier and it was a beautiful hotel. They returned home the next day and now it is back to routine. The Christmas season has also been a season of sadness for many area families. Our sympathies are extended to Marie Blake and family on the passing of George Blake. George was the husband of Marie for 65-and-a-half years and from the time they were married, lived on the corner of Moncrieff (8th of Morris) and Brussels Line. The couple had 10 children, Gerald, Anne, Jim, Murray, Phil, Joyce, Bruce and Julie and son Bob and infant William, who predeceased him. George farmed alongside many of his sons and raised cattle and cash cropped. He loved to drive the combine and be in the field. He was also a dealer for Pride Seeds for many years in the area. A devoted family man and husband, he would be seldom seen without Marie or one of his family by his side. Our condolences to all the family and the extended Blake and Deitner families. Our sympathies to the Higgins family on the sudden loss of Marilyn Higgins. She will be missed by her children Ken and Deb and their families. Our condolences to the extended Higgins and Goll families. Our condolences are expressed to the Terpstra family on the sudden loss of Brian Terpstra. Left to mourn his passing are wife Annette and two small children and parents Nick and Cathy Terpstra of Donegal. Our sympathies to the extended Terpstra and Lockhart families of the area. The loss of a loved one also touched the McDonald family, with the sudden loss of our Aunt Mary Huether. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Brian, Dave, Joyce and Joan and their families on the loss of Mary. Mary will be remembered as a long-standing teacher at Brussels Public School. Many a time in conversation a name would be mentioned and she would say, oh yes, I taught them. Mary was a great community supporter and attended almost every function that was held. She had a great memory for names and family connections and was the one who kept the family up to date with family events. She was an early bird, a hard worker and would have a day’s work done before many were out of bed. She was always busy, was a former curler, played cards, entertained her friends, helped at the church and thought of others with phone calls, cards or small gifts. Mary was many things, but she will always be remembered as a kind and thoughtful woman to all she called family and friend. Our condolences to the extended Huether and McDonald families. Our sympathies are extended to Bill Brown and family on the sudden loss of wife Clara Brown. Daughters Betty Glanville and Nora Eckert and families are offered our condolences. The hospitals have been a busy place to visit this Christmas season with many local folks having stays there. Seaforth Hospital has Leona McDonald and Carla Knight as patients. Howard Hackwell has been in and out and in and out. Allan Searle was in Clinton Hospital and has been released and Kathleen Williamson is in recovering from hipsurgery there. Doreen Hackwell isout of hospital and is coming alongpretty well. Marie McTaggart is nowin her new bed at Huronlea and EdnaPearson (Alec) is now at theSeaforth Manor. Catching up withHenry Grobbink was easy as he is recovering from hip surgery. He is doing very well. We hope Jim McDonald recovers quickly from a arm/shoulder injury suffered on a fall. Congratulations to Kent and Jasmine Moffett on the birth of a wee daughter, Annabelle (Ella). Ella is a granddaughter for Ken and Gail (Travis) of Bayfield. A note of interest is Ella arrived on Tuesday before daughter Kelly’s wedding and mom Jasmine was a bridesmaid for Kelly. Jasmine was a trooper and so was new daddy Kent and Ella behaved very well for the day’s affair. Congratulations to all. New Year’s Eve marked the wedding of Scott McNaughton and Sherri Fields at the Arden Park in Stratford. Scott is the son of Art and Joan McNaughton and Sherri is from Clinton. Ron and Pauline Bennett are the grandparents and report that it was a beautiful wedding with a black, silver and burgundy colour scheme. Congrats to Scott and Sherri.
