Iron-clad effort

over the Hanover Barons. The first win was at the North

Holiday wins helpsolidify Ironmen’s
place in standings
The Wingham Ironmen
strengthened their hold on second
place in the Western Junior C
Hockey League, with a pair of wins
over the Hanover Barons on Dec. 29
and Jan. 2.
Playing at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Dec. 29 the Ironmen received a
four-point effort from Tyler Kellum
as they defeated the Barons 8-3.
Playing in Hanover Sunday
afternoon, the Ironmen scored a 5-3
decision over the Barons to sweep
the season series.
Kellum had a goal and three
assists to pace the Wingham victory.
Graham Ashcroft netted a pair of
goals, with Justin Jacklin getting a
goal and an assist. Single markers
were added by Blair Goss, Brett
Brophy, Evan Ducharme and Wade
Stephenson. Cory MacDonald
collected three assists.
Following the game last
Wednesday evening, coach Chad
Haggitt said the Ironmen played
“pretty well”.
“We didn’t play all that well in the
first period, and we played pretty
well in the second and third
periods,” he said.
Hanover scored a couple of late
third-period powerplay goals to
make the score closer than it should
have been.
“It’s tough to be totally up all the
time,” Haggitt said. “We got a
couple of penalties also.”
According to the coach, the 10-
day break seemed to have benefitted
the Ironmen.
“It’s nice to get a win after a 10-
day break,” he said. “We worked
hard.”
The coach noted that before the
break, the Ironmen had played
seven games in 10 days.
With the return match in Hanover
on Jan. 2, Haggitt said the Ironmen
planned on doing the same thing by
playing hard.
Defenceman Chase Chapman of
Brussels said they managed to get
all the Christmas dinners out of their
system following the first period.
He noted that the team’s passes
were clicking and the team played
great.
The game became more physical
in the second and third period
resulted in penalties to the
Ironmen.
“We are happy with the win,” he
said.
Branden MacDonald played a
stellar game in the Wingham net,
making 30 saves, as the Barons
outshot the Ironmen 33-28.
The Ironmen have a single game
this weekend, hosting the Mount
Forest Patriots on Friday, beginning
at 8 p.m.
Good game
It wasn’t easy, but the Blyth/Brussels Midget Girls had a great game on Jan. 2 against
Normanby (Ayton), beating the visitors by a score of 4-1 at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre. (Vicky Bremner photo)
