THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 2011.Sports Blyth Atoms win tourney with undefeated streak The Christmas season was very joyous for the Blyth Atom Rep Bulldogs as they played in the Zurich Thunder tournament. The dogs were more in the mood for receiving than giving on Dec. 27-28. Their first game was against the Milverton Drives and the game started off a little sluggish as if both teams had too much turkey. The Bulldogs started the scoring halfway through the first period only to see the Milverton team come right back to tie it seconds later. After trading goals for the first and second periods the Bulldogs broke it open in the third period and held on for a hard-fought 6-3 win. The second game was played later that afternoon and was against a very tough Strathroy team. Blyth opened the scoring in the second period only to have Strathroy come back to tie it a few minutes later. It was end-to-end action with neither team being able to beat each other’s goalie and Blyth had to settle for the tie. Due to point totals, the Bulldogs got the nod to go to the A finals where they would meet Tavistock. Excited to be in the A finals, the Bulldogs came out hard and fast as they again opened the scoring in the first period. Leading by a score of 1- 0 after the first period the Tavistock team came back to tie it in the second. Entering the third period, both teams had played very well going back and forth unable to score. Early in the third period the Bulldogs regained the lead after Parker Gibbings’ second goal of the game only to have Tavistock come back to tie it once again. The Bulldogs replied seconds later on the hattrick from Parker and the team hung on for a well-deserved A championship win. The final score was 3-2. The Bulldogs continued their great play as they travelled to Goderich where they found themselves down 3-0 going into the third period against a strong Goderich team and came back to earn a hard-fought 3-3 tie. The first game of 2011 went just like the last few of 2010 as the Bulldogs played BCH, with whom they are tied in the WOAA standings. The team played a great game and came out on top 6-3. The coaching staff is very proud of the way the team has played and look forward to a strong run in the upcoming playoffs. “A” champs include: Spenser Lazarvich, Colin Howson, Drew Van Wyk, Damen Allen, Ethan Scrimgeour, Ethan Coultes, Jared Shearer, Bailey Bos, Carsen Richmond, Parker Gibbings, Griffin MacDonald, Michaela Rodger. The next home game is on Sunday, Jan. 16 against Mitchell at 3 p.m. Winter Sports Pages Blyth B u l l d o g s A t o m — B a c k r o w , f r o m l e f t : L o r e t t a T h o m p s o n , T r e v o r R a y n a r d , Aaron P o p p , T y l e r B l a c k , J o h n L e C o m t e , J e f f P l a e t z e r , M a t t h e w P o p p , F o u r t h r o w : Coache s K i r k S t e w a r t , C h a d H a g g i t t , C o l e S t e w a r t , K a r e n P e n n i n g t o n , D o r e e n Thomps o n , L i n d a P l a e t z e r , D o u g W a l k e r , L a r r y P l a e t z e r . (Vicky Bremner photo) Midgets clinch win in last game of 2010 The Blyth Midget Rep Bulldogs played their last game of 2010 in Elma Logan on Thursday Dec. 30. The bench was short with four of the regular players unable to attend and the Midget Local League team was also playing the same night. Elma Logan opened the scoring in the first five minutes of the game. It would take Blyth until the early minutes of the second period before they would tie it up when Adam Cronin found the twine, assisted by Matt Chalmers. Later in the second period Elma Logan would pull ahead by two. The rest between the second and third gave Blyth the edge they needed. About halfway through the third Ryan Sholdice would score, with assists to Matt Popp and Shea McLean. Two and a half minutes later McLean would score again, assisted by Jeremy Ross and Kody Higgins. Cronin would score one more to round out the period, resulting in a 4-3 win for Blyth. The Saugeen Maitland AA Lightning offence found the back of the net six times before the Brantford Icecats could respond with two late goals in Lower Lakes Female Hockey League action over the Dec. 31, Jan. 1-2 weekend. Leading the way for Saugeen with goals were Brooklyn Irwin (two), Marcie Landman (two), Sarah Gossell and Brittany Butcher. Assists went to Landman (two), Irwin (two), Gossell (two), Dollee Meigs (two), Butcher, Gina Murray and Ashley Reid. The 6-2 win boosts the Lightning’s record to 10 wins, three losses and two ties. Last week, the Lightning skated in the 30th annual Mississauga Chiefs Christmas Classic tournament. They lost their opening game 2-1 to Barrie followed by two ties against Etobicoke (2-2) and Brampton (3-3). In the playoff round, the Lightning faced off against the Barrie Sharks. Call-up Bantam AA goalie, Shea Tiley did her part, keeping the Sharks off the score sheet in regulation play. Although the Lightning controlled most of the play and outshot the Sharks, it was Barrie who scored the eventual overtime winner on a powerplay and advanced with a 1-0 victory. The Lightning head to Scarborough next weekend to participate in the Scarborough Sharks Ice Trials tournament. Lightning beat Icecats, knocked out of tourney BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED
