Then when the most significant full moon came along I forgot to mention it. However the full moon in December occurred on Dec. 21, the marking of the winter solstice. Because this is the longest night of the year, this moon has been named the Long Night Moon. Also it seems the moon is seen above the horizon for a long time. It is sometimes called the Moon Before Yule. This December full moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low sun as this is the shortest day of the year. This December’s full moon was particularly significant because that night the world experienced a total lunar eclipse. The sun passed in front of the moon shutting off the moonlight. This was the first total lunar eclipse on the shortest day of the year for over 400 years. Unfortunately it was cloudy in our area and sky watchers didn’t get the full effect of the eclipse. Although many other parts of the world experienced various types of nasty weather over the Christmas weekend, we in southern Ontario had some truly great weather for celebrating. Travelling proved to be no problem and folks enjoyed their gatherings without that worry. The storms of early December provided snow for sledding, skiing and snowmobiling. It’s great to see just how many families find the Londesborough Community Hall comfortable for their gatherings. And to think we were once in danger of losing the building. And I’m always loathe to put away the decorations and lose that “Christmas feeling”. Now, as always, we look forward to the new year with optimism. This quote by an unnamed author may suggest a resolution: “Your Merry Christmas may depend upon what others give you....but your Happy New Year depends upon what you give others.” Unfortunately there were some in the area who faced sadness over the holiday time. The Verburg and Lubbers families suffered the loss of Roely Verburg. Roely was the sister- in-law of Janie and Martin Wilts and John and Margaret Verburg. The village extends condolences to Tony and all the family as they cope with their loss. Clare Vincent has now returned to Huronlea following a heart attack the week prior to Christmas. Bob Trick reports Clare is doing well. John Lyons was discharged from hospital in Clinton on Christmas Day only to be admitted to Stratford Hospital a few days later. He is dealing with a number of related issues.“How does God comfort goodpeople when bad things happen tothem? He gives them courage, companionship and compassion.” You can help these families with your prayers, support and concern. The children headed back to classes on Monday. Hullett Central Public School planned on holding its postponed Christmas Concert on Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. The Happy Gang Seniors will hold their January card party on Friday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. at the Community Hall, weather permitting. CHURCH CHRISTMAS CONCERT The old-fashioned Christmas Concert held at Londesborough United Church on Monday, December 20th was an opportunity for persons of all ages to gain confidence, to share their developing talents and to entertain. And in front of an approving audience of family and friends. Mrs. Claus, aka Laura Scott, emceed the program and provided encouragement to the various acts. The Brohman family began the concert with a shadow story using an overhead projector. Teague was enjoying “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” as much as was the audience as he narrated. Dad, Barry, spoke the part of the Grinch while the “Who” girls changed the figures. Christmas vocals were offered throughout the evening. Cassie and Chloe Elliott, in red Santa hats sang about Rudolph. Sara Hunking wanted “Nuttin’ for Christmas”. Illiana Kreuger with help from her sister, Audrey, asked in song “Who’s That Man All Dressed in Red?” Ken Scott led everyone in “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Janet Laveck sang a touching song titled, “Mary, Did You Know?” Then Janet and Marsha Szusz sang “Do You See What I See?” accompanied by KerriGrant.A Welsh carol, “On to BethlehemTown”, was one of the numbersperformed by Terry and Mary Fletcher. The senior choir seemed to have problems with all the “Twelve Months of Christmas” according to their musical skit. The children were entertained by the ‘vocals’ and tricks that Daisy, along with her owner Jane Hoggart, did. Daisy was all dressed up for the occasion in shades and a coat. Piano pupils who demonstrated their progress tickling the ivorieswith Christmas tunes were PeytonSwan, Kiara Driscoll, SydneyHunking and Quaid Kerr. Quaid alsoplayed “O Christmas Tree” on his guitar. Clogging to “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” were Kerri and Avery and Karen and Nicole Whyte. Dance routines were appreciated from Mary Kate Allen and Kaitlyn Hoggart as well. Shayna Hunking and Jake Yantzi recited “Five Little Bells” and “A Christmas Ball” respectively. Poems by Robert Service were recited by two somewhat oldsters. Big winners The Blyth Bantam Rep Bulldogs were winners of the Bantam C Silver Stick Tournament in Kincardine last weekend. They defeated Seaforth in the final on Dec. 30 to win the title. Members of the team include Matthew Van Wyk, Michael Van Wyk, Kyle Pollard, Ardon Coultes, Wyatt Carey, Braydon Whitfield, Dallas Coultes, Ryan Nesbitt, Dustin Pennington, Spencer Stevenson, Rob Gordon and Dalton Carey. The team is coached by Scott Stevenson, head coach and Dallas Pennington, assistant coach. Neil Rodger is the trainer.
