Another year. A higher number. A
new start. 2011!
Where will life take us this year?
Opportunities abound – new people
to meet, new places to see, new
things to try. 2011 is so enticing.
What to do first?
Life seemed pretty tame last week,
in a good way of course. The visitors
were all gone, the parties were spent
and the gifts unwrapped. But the 12
days of Christmas were still with us
for celebrations. It can be hard to
keep track of the days after
Christmas, we’re so good at the
before countdown. You almost need
to hum the song to know which day
of Christmas we’re on. So the
celebrations continue until
Epiphany, Jan. 6, which just happens
to be the date of my Mother’s birth.
At this house, all the decorations
stay intact until then, giving me lots
of quiet days to contemplate the
good memories of Christmas this
year and many from the past. Tree
lights on, coffee in hand, hit the
comfortable chair and review all the
good times. Life is good.
Lots of visitors were out and about
over the past two weeks, enjoying
family time. Travelling was great,
with just the right amount of snow to
be called white but not a threat to
safety. Our Phil got back to
Whitecourt and Peter Workman to
Iqaluit before the new year hit. The
university crew is still here, enjoying
a little quiet time before heading
back next week. They seem to
mature more every time they
come home, unless you ask the
parents. Keep up the good work,
guys.
Church services are always great
in this season, the grown-up kids
return, the neighbours come, the
grandchildren are here and visitors
pop in as well. The good feeling of
the season permeates the very air we
breath and the mood is one of peace
and goodwill, oh to keep it for the
next 11 months. A nice surprise for
the Brussels United folk was to see
Nancy Corrigan in our pews. Out for
her daily walk while visiting Betty
Gowing, she popped in and joined
us. Home is now in New Brunswick,
where she is a Minister in
Florenceville. Good to see you and
Bruce.
Mark Jan. 10 on your calendar,
Joan Bernard might forget what day
it is, so give her a call to remind her
of that Happy Birthday song.
The mystery of housework
remains that for me. I cleaned a
closet this week to find a favourite
single glove, and actually knew
where the mate was hiding, actually
stashed. I’ve had it for a long time
and just couldn’t throw it out. So
for me 2011 is starting out very
nicely.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Welcome to 2011 and a Happy
New Year to all. We hope everyone
enjoyed the holidays and are ready
to get into the swing of things for
the upcoming year. A little business
to finish up for 2010 first.
The Executive and General
meeting were held on Tuesday, Dec.
28 to deal with the business of the
month. A successful month of
activities was held at the Branch
including two family Christmas
dinners, meat draws and wing night.
A little tidbit of information I forgot
to mention was the night of the meat
draws, there was a surprise visit by
Santa and Mrs. Claus and their
number one Elf, Mary. They stayed
around to enjoy some of the draws
and had their pictures taken with
some of the folks attending. The
Branch needs to purchase some new
sound equipment as well as some
updated software. There have been
three new dart boards purchased
and information about a
shuffleboard table is still
unavailable. The Zone sign-up sheet
for euchre is up at the Branch for
Jan. 31 in Lucknow. Membership
renewals need to be done before the
end of January and we encourage
Comrades who have not renewed to
do so as soon as possible. We also
encourage any interested persons
wishing to join the Branch to
contact the Branch or Membership
Chairman Greg Wilson.
The final night of darts was held
just before Christmas and had 15
darters having fun, food and prizes.
The first place team was Greta Zehr
and Roger McHardy; second,
Lawrence Machan, Tim Harrison
and Deb Burch; high shot, Sandra
Josling, 134. The group played dart
games of Rudolph, Rock Around
the Christmas Tree and Run, Run
Reindeer. It was a fun evening with
lots of delicious snacks and prizes.
It is time to apply for Bursaries.

Swell!
With last weekend’s warm weather came rain and then eventual thawing which caused local
rivers and streams to swell. The Maitland River between Belgrave and Brussels was one such
location where the majority of this tree’s trunk was under water. (Vicky Bremner photo)
