“BRAVO MR. DEACHjMAN
(Maclean’s Magazine)
Of individual accomplishments by
members of Canada’s Eighteenth
Parliament, the service tendered bis.
tax-paying constituents -by R. J.
Deachman, Liberal member of North
Huron, is Worthy of some form of
permanent commemoration.
"When Hon. J, L. Ilsley, Minister '
of National Revenue, set out to re
duce the number of customs ports (we
had 500, the United Kingdom 80, the
United States 270), his ears were
shattered by the pained howling of
local members defending their pat
ronage lists.
Mr. Deachman was a notable ex- >
ception. When the customs outpost
at Winghamf in his pwn bailiwick,
was closed, instead of .entering an
unreasoned protest, he asked for
and; received full particulars of the
business, done at the port and the .
cost of its maintenance. After study
ing the figures, he'conceded the desir
ability of closing it.
: Boarding a train, Mr. Deachman -
went to Wingham, hired the local
broadcasting- station and took the
public into his confidence. He told the
facts, praised Mr,Ilsley for his ac
tion arid asked the electors to sup
port,him.
Realizing that they were paying
for quarters, heating, upkeep, salar
ies, etc., at a rate out of all propor
tion to the revenue taken in. the tax-
<?1d support Jiim; The town
of Wingham parted with its govern
ment office willingly,
- Bravo, Mr. Deap'hman.
Unfortunately the Deachman pre*
cedent is net being fallowed by other
members. Ta dHte. the Minister has
succeeded in closing twenty-two cus
toms ports. In mast cases, we learn,
the decisian can only be rated as a
temporary triumph far business-like
