The two aspects of Scouting which, rightly, have always been most distinctive were the expectation that the promise or "word" of a Scout was to be regarded more highly than that of an ordinary boy: the idea of "Scout's honor," and the daily Good Turn. The first, it is to be 0 feared, has been often di sregarded; the second lampooned consistently but after the first few generations of Scouts, more honored in the breach than the observance so that a Scout "Good Turn" is now unusual enough to furnish material for news stories in the annual Boy Scout Week. The Age limits for joining are from eight to 10 years old although boys already in Wolf Cubs coming from other Packs can be taken up to 11 yearS The regular time for Meetings is open for discussion, to be determined according to the wishes of the parents and the nature of the program, 4:30 p.m. being the alternative time. Parents are asked particularly to indicate their wishes as to time by coming in peison or sending a note to the Pack Scouter. Parents are also urged not to encourage their sons to commit themselves too deeply to leisure activities through the winter and spring bnt to help them to, in the words of the Wolf Cub Promise, "do their best" in whatever they take up. Conflicts that might arise in the spring or early summer as the year's program of Cubbing reaches its climax in the awarding of earned badges should be pointed out to them as the younger mind is often inclined to overlook the future in preoccupation with the present. Lastly it should be remembered that the annual registration fee is $3,50 and this is not refundable once paid even if the boy ceases to attend soon after paying it. to take up, wholeheartedly, ,.„ L. One is tempted to think of the country tippler of a century ago being taken into the Queen's Service at the price of an extra drink-- the Queen's shilling being deftly slipped into his mug of beer by the unscrupulous recruiting sergeant! It is, I think, matter of congratulation for Clinton that as the Scout and Wolf Cub programs become open to wider choice so that they are merely one form of activity existing in a community which, for its size, provides super-abundant choices of leisure time occupations to its youth: skating, Little League, music, library, Sunday School programs in keeping with modern needs and tastes, and a wide variety of school and extra mural activities that there is no attempt to influence the choice of young people among all of the options open to them and that stress is put on doing well what each chooses rather than attempting to distort individual choice by placing an irrelevant or improper value on one organization over another. Scouting and Cubbing have always been a voluntary movement, not only in the sense that the leaderd work long hours week by week without any pay, with little recognition, buying uniforms and paying expenses out of their own pockets but more especially that it is a free choice of each boy whether he joins or not and it is, and has been, the responsibility of the leader to make the consequence of his choice clear to him before he does join and make his formal promise. Many boys this year are to be congratulated that they have made a choice — in the best Wolf Cub tradition — not to continue in Cubbing but rather BY MRS, BERT ALLEN Congratulations are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shobbrook who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last Friday evening Nov. 14th. After a time it ' becomes positively harmful as it makes the symbol of success more important than its achievement — a North American failing which Scouting was set up to counteract, among other things. As Wolf ,Cubs are judged by the number of badges they wear, without regard to the legitimacy Of their award, so the Cub program comes to be evaluated by the number of members it has without regard to its value to them, the legitimacy of its objectives or even adherence to its program. This has led to national membership drives and, The November meeting of the Berean Unit of the U.C.W. met on Tuesday with 13 members answering the roll call with donations of money and articles for the children's shelter.
