week, the team was here aiso to
assess the base's usefulness for
transport training after the
military ' phases out its
operations in. 1971.
In other news related to the
slated closing of,.the base, a

agencies and industries
considering use of the base has
gone into a third printing. Many
requests for the booklet have
come from federal departments

response to one of several
questions directed to the
minister by Mr. McKinley in, the
House of Commons on Oct, 22.
Mr. McKinley also proposed
that the DND pay for a study of
new uses for the base, but Mr.
Cadieux suggested that the
provincial government undertake
such a project. •
A third question - by Mr.
McKinley, one concerning
removal of equipment from the

speaker, Lucien Lamoureux, said

guPstion for the. Minister .of
National Defence, Mr. Speaker.
In view of the announcement
that the Canadian Forces Base at
Clinton is to be phased out by
September, 1971p would the
minister give us an assurance,
that the normal maintenance
service, such as the painting of
houses, will continue to be
carried out up to that time?
Since I may not have an
opportunity to put a
supplementary, Mr. Speaker, I
shall ask a further question at
this point. Would the minister
consider initiating, and paying
for, a feasibility study by a
private concern so that such a
study could be made available to
potential buyers who may take
over this place after 1971? Can
the minister give an assurance,
also, that nothing will be
removed from the base
Mr. Speaker: Order, please.
Leo Cadieux: First, I can give
the hon. member an assurance
that the base will be kept in
good shape and good order until
we vacate it on the date the hon.
member has quoted. As far as a
feasibility study is concerned, it
has been our experience that
working with the provincial
organizations, which specialize
in problems of this nature, we
have been quite successful.
Instead of my department
paying for a feasibility study, it
is my suggestion that perhaps
the provincial authorities who
are concerned with these
problems might wish to talk to us
about it. They would be
welcome to, do so. I am sorry,
but I did not hear the last part
of the question.
Mr. McKinley: It is very
short, Mr. Speaker—
Mr. Speaker: Order. The hon.
member indicates he has a -short
supplementary question. At the
same time there are a number of
other hon. members who would
like to ask questions, and I
suggest we have for some
minutes, now, gone beyond the
hour reserved for oral questions.

Thieves get
hydro metal
A one-ton, forestrY truck and
a quantity of copper and other
scrap metal were discovered
missing from the Ontario Hydro
service centre on Highway 4 at
the south end of Clinton
yesterday morning,
Police said the thieves scaled
the fence and used a bolt cutter
from a Hydro truck to sever the
look on the gate. They said the
truck was started by
manipulating the ignition
system. The ignition on at least
one other truck showed signs of
tampering, police said.
Mr. Palmer said he believed the
thieves needed several hours to
go through the trucks and
remove the metal. Crews arriving
for work about 7:40 a.m.
yesterday discovered the thefts,
Police said the bolt cutter was
still lying on the parking lot by
the gate.
The truck was found
abandoned at Kerwood, west of
Strathroy, about 9:30 a.m.
Provincial police indentification
experts were called to assist
townpolice.
