In Canada, they're looking at rapeseed oil, the product of relatiVely new crop that's been booming • on the Canadian prairies. The Study of rapeseed oil as a poultry feed is a new tack in the search for ways to use rapeseed products as animal feed. There's a concentrated research effort under way to improve rapeseed meal for livestock feed because the meal is a by-product of the oil industry, It's the oil that's been the more valuable rapeseed product because' it's used as salad dressing, cooking oil and in products such as margarine. According to recent research reports, scientists have solved many of the major problems surrounding the use of rapeseed meal for livestock. But the possibility of using rapeseed oil for poultry, feed opens new vistas and markets for the crop. R. E. Salmon of the Canada Department of Agriculture's Swift Current Research Station is in the vanguard of the rapeseed oil research, lie and other scientists have experimented with tallow as a twit'y ration ingredient, "As long as we keep our ratios i.e. balance as we increase fat content, chickens and turkeys make good use of the added energy," he says, Feed manufacturers have been using tallow because it's cheap and readily available, Mr. Salmon Says that poultty don't make as good use of tallow AS they can of oils. In other words, farmers have to feed more tallow than rapeseed oil to achieve the same results. The picture isn't entirely rosy, however, for rapeseed oil. Rapeseed oil can depress early growth of poults and chicks. Mr. Salmon has been able to overcome this problem by blending the rapeseed oil with 25 per cent tallow. But the biggest problem is carcass quality. Mr, Salmon has found that the type of fat turkeys produce depends on the type of fat they're being fed in their rations. Tallow is a solid at room temperatures, so poultry eating tallow produce carcasses that have relatively firm fat. Rapeseed and soybean oils are liquid at room temperatures, so carcass fat tends to be soft. When Mr. Salmon's turkeys that were fed rapeseed oil were slaughtered and graded warm 82 per cent graded A for fat cover. This was an improVement over turkeys fed no added fat, which graded only 73 per cent A for fat cover, However, palm oil, a more saturated fat similar to tallow, yielded 100 per cent grade A carcasses. When the carcasses were chilled overnight, grades improved considerably. Mixing tallow and rapeseed oil in the poultry ration will also improve carcass appearance more than rapeseed oil alone.
