Sheer Fabrics burn better Tens of thousands of Canadian homes will be, struck by
fire this year. Most of these fires will be caused, by carelessness
and neglect. Did you know that if your
clothing catches fire, you
'have less chance of a severe
burn wearing a cotton slip
and a nylon dress than a
nylon slip and a cotton dress?
A Canadian fire scientist
says that although fabrics
such as rayon, cotton or linen
are more flammable than
animal fibres such as silk or
wool or the newer synthetic
materials, other properties
Make sure that your home isn't one of them

have a drastic effect on the
spread of flame.
For example, sheer silk
will ignite easily and burn
rapidly and rayon or cotton
flannel,. will have a low flame
intensity. A fabric with a
deep pile surface will
normally burn with fierce
intensity. So will an open
weave fabric because the
individual stands of yarn are
surrounded by oxygen.

Gasoline a fickle cleaner
Never use gasoline, benzine,
naphtha or similar volatile
flammable liquids for cleaning or
other household purposes.
Gasoline, in particular, is
treacherous in that it may be
used many times without
accident where atmospheric
conditions are not right for an
explosion. But properly mixed
with air, its explosive power has
been compared with that of
dynamite.
Countryside
Plagued by
Grass Fires
Grass fires are the bane of
country areas. Fighting them '
costs a pretty penny to the mun-
icipality.
Learn from the farmer that
good fire prevention habits are
a must since "round- the-
corner " protection from a fire
department is not available.
Lightning - lightning rods
should be well grounded.
Gasoline - never refuel
tractoE• or lawnmower inside or
when the motor is still hot.
Chimneys and heating ap-
paratus - keep them in good
repair, away from walls and
furniture.
Picnickers and campers
should make sure fires are out
when leaving.
If a rural fire, alert your neighbors and at
the same time request them to bring
water in any container available, at the,
time. If possible, stress the necessity of
keeping roads clear for passage of fire
truck.
When the truck arrives at the scene of the
fire, the Fire Chief is in full command.
GRANT RATH, Fire Chief, Town of
Clinton:.
When fire is discovered, even though it
appears to be small, don't delay, but Dial
Clinton 482-3820.
Don't panic! Speak slowly and distinctly,
giving your name and location. If a rural
fire, give Name, Township, Lot and
Concession, location of fire and best
route from Clinton.
Do not leave the telephone until you have
given all the necessary information.
