runners on second and third and
Carter hit his second triple to
PushCorunna's tally to five runs
while Clinton had yet to
score.
Clinton's first two batters
were out before Stu Mustard
pounded a home run over the
right field fence for the Colts'
first run. Archie Pickett had no
trouble in the third, facing only
three batters, Butch Fleet led off
with a walk, then Little Joe
Livermore hit a long fly ball to
the fence, but it was caught for
Clinton's first out.
Pickett hit a single, Cam
Colquhoun was safe on a
fielder's choice. The Giants'.
third baseman tagged Butch
Fleet out at third on the play for
two out. Leppington scored
both runners on one of his
patented key singles over the
first base bag, then scored on
Laurie Coiquhoun's triple,
Corunna had two runners on
in the fourth and one in the fifth
on two hits, but they all were
left on base. Livermore was
Clinton's only base runner from
the fourth to the ninth innings
(in the fifth). With one out in
the sixth, shortstop Laurie
Colquhoun dropped a pop fly,
allowing Giant Doug Kennedy to
get to first base. Corunna second
baseman Bill Fleekie pulled a
beautiful sacrifice bunt to
advance Kennedy, then Doug
Peters hit a double, putting two
on base, The powerful Craig
Carter hit a hard single to right.
It bounced under Deer's glove
and went to the fence as two
more runs scored. Carter went
home on McKenzie's double to
give Corunna a comfortable 8-4
lead.
Both The Colts' Pickett and
Corunna's Jack Druitt pitched
good ball in the last three
innings. In the ninth, Laurie
Colquhoun struck out, then
Daer put his homer over the 320
:nark in centrefield to give a
dramatic ending to Clinton's
game. Stu Mustard walked,
advanced to second on a
sacrifice hit by Doc Miller and
then Butch Fleet hit a long, high
tly to right field where
Corunna's Bill Lockrey leaped
up on the fence and pulled down
the ball just before it went over
for a homer.
Half6century
in business
Clifford Lobb, a Clinton
merchant who says he was too
stubborn to go broke in the
depression, sold his Albert Street
shoe store this week and ended
nearly 49 years in the retail
trade in town.
Wesley Holland, former
service station operator and
former member of town council,
is the new proprietor of the
store. Elwin H. Merrill, who
worked with Mr. Lobb for 15
years, will remain as store
manager, according to Mr.
Holland.
Mr. Lobb, a native of
Goderich Township, opened a
grocery business in the store
now occupied by the Clinton
Meat Market. That will be • 49
years ago in January. He later
sold shoes and dry goods in the
premises now occupied by
Stedman's and then in the
building housing McAdam's
Hardware today. The shoe store
has been in its present location
opposite the Town Hall for 12
years.
A widower, Mr. Lobb has a
daughter, Mrs. Helen Chabot, in
Clinton, and two sons, Orval in
Chatham and Everett, stationed
with the armed forces in
Edmonton, Alta. He also has
seven grandchildren.
Mr. Lobb said this week that
of the men running stores in
town when he opened his
grocery, he is the only one left.
"A lot went broke in the
depression," he recalls, "but I
was too Stubborn."
As to his future plans, he says,
"I haven't decided yet."
