when deep—fat frying
French—fried potatoes, chicken,
and many other foods are, delicious
when prepared in your deep—fat
fryer. But, for safety's sake, keep
the frying temperature at the
proper level by using and watching
a cooking thermometer.
The flash point, or temperature at
which the vapours from the boiling
fat can be ignited by a matchflame
or spark, is less than 100 degrees
above the maximum frying
temperature of 400 degrees. And
the ignition temperature, at which
the hot fat itself can burst into
flame, is only about 200 degrees
higher than the flash point,
Therefore, it is very important to
keep the frying temperature to a
controlled, safe level.
Never leave your fryer unattended
while warming fat to frying temp—
erature. Because heat from the
stove element under the fryer
cannot escape rapidly, the temp—
erature of the fat rises quickly,
It can increase past the frying
level to flash point and ignition
stages in the time you might
take to answer the door or
telephone, If you are interrupted by
a call during frying, be sure to
turn down the element underyour
fryer. Don't rely on fryer thermo—
stats — although they help reduce
the danger of overheating, they
don't always work.

deep—fat frying in your home?

With the parents of this present
teenage•generation? What makes
.the kids so rebellious that they
• will risk everything just to show
their moms and dads they will
live their own lives despite all
they have been taught?
I don't blame the kids for
their .way-out behaviour. I never
have. It seems to me that if
mother and father cannot sell
the good life through their own
examples, it is not the child's
fault if he wanders off the
accepted trail.
And now the problems are
getting worse. It used to be that
kids felt they were over-stepping
parental authority just by
buying a bottle of wine and
enjoying a little petting vssion.'
Nowadays kids aren't really with
it unless they have tread the
narrow line between sobriety
and intoxication or
experimented with the
excitement of free love, the freer
the better.
When you really analyze it
all, I suppose the kids Must delve
more deeply into the outer
elements of sin and destruction
because mom and dad are
proving they aren't shocked any
more by the innocent little
flirtations up in the hay mow or
in the back seat of , the family
car.
In fact, it might well be that
mom and dad consider a typical
evening out will include a
friendly swap of partners, too

children do to ontseless thern
.and raise a bit of a stink?
Well how about glue sniffing
and pot puffing for openers?
You're laughing. Don't. Kids just
like yours are wading right into
dangerous situations which they
are too immature to handle and
too proud to discuss, After all,
they are supPosed to be the
informed generation,
If pure and simple lust
doesn't impress anyone any
more, maybe a hashish trip will.
Let's try it and see if mom and
dad really care.
Here's where the plot
thickens, Mom and dad, in their
zeal to be modern parents, try to
ignore the fact that a
troublesome situation exists,
They take the scientific
approach and speak to the
youngster about the harmless
enjoyment to be found in drugs.
Or they belt the kid in the
mouth and show about as much
A meeting of all boys
interested in continuing the
Clinton Wolf Cub program will
be held at 142 Princess Street
East on Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m.
Parents will be asked later to
come to an evening meeting to
register their sons.
Leaders say that last year's
experiences show a need to
change the format of the cub
program. Many boys are still
interested in 'the traditional
pattern of character formation
in Baden-Powell's system of
Wolf Cubs but many others have
been corning only because of
parents' wishes or because being
,in Cubs seems the thing to do.
It is expected that meetings
will be held at 4:30 p.m. on
Thursdays throughout the
winter, but the location has not
yet been decided, Both Lt.

love and concern as a lion
stalking his prey.
Whatever happened to the
good old levelling sessions when
mother and daughter would sit
down and just talk until they
actually knew each other? Why
don't fathers and sans go fishing
together any more, using that
time of companionship to
discuss some matters which are
bothering both of them?
Sometimes I think I know my
next-door neighbor better than I
know my own children, Why?
Because I talk more to her than
to them, that's why.
And therein lies the answer to
the dilemma over the generation
gap, as far as I'm concerned. I'm
convinced that if I get to know
my kids, if we get on the same
basis as good friends who trust
each other, I'll have done more
to promote good mother-kids
relations than if I raised their
allowance to $10 a week or
whacked them silly every hour
on the hour.
and Mrs. Carter will be involved,
but plans are not to run two
packs with different meeting
times and places.,
Boys of eight years who wish
to join the Cubs should attend
on the 16th with the other boys.
Cubs who did not complete star
and badge tests last year are
invited to come on the same
date to arrange to complete
them even if they do not intend
to continue with Cubbing, The

for most of the summer should
not, he says, keep anyone from
