Minister' of Agriculture and Food, and the Hon, Jean' Marchand, Federal Minister of Regional Economic jointly announce an extension of the Ontario Farm Enlargement. and Consolidation Program.. This program was initiated in MO under the federal-provincial Rural Development Agreement (ARDA), and - its acceptance by Ontario farmers has resulted in one of the largest agriculture Adjustment programs ever nndertaken in Canada. The purpose of the farm enlargement program is to enable the small farm to enlarge to a size that will produce .a satisfactory income to the operator. To date approximately 1,000 Ontario farmers have enlarged (heir operations with ARDA assistance. There is a two-fold effect since the same number of individuals have been assisted out of agriculture through purchase of their properties for enlargement purposes. Experience has indicated that the scope of the enlargement The Blyth Agricultural Society's 5th annual horse show Saturday night attracted 500 spectators at the arena. Donald Young, secretary of the society, said attendance was down slightly from last year. He said saddle class entries predominated, 20 compared to 10 in the light and heavy horse classes. - In the feature event, Roy Beuerman of Monkton won the musical chairs and wiener race. Douglas Ward of Monkton won the pickup race. Winners in the western saddle classes were Ross Lenhardt of Bornholm and Margaret Shobbrook of Blyth, program should be broadened to encompass more disadvantaged rural people. A final priority is the purchase of uneconomic farm units from operator§ fifty-five years of age and over, who have been unable to sell their properties. These units will be consolidated and made available for future agricultural development. The estimated cost of the new program announced today is $12,000,000 over a two-year period. The costs will be shared equally by the Provincial and Federal Governments. In the Palomino class, Miss Shobbrook and Keith Moffatt of Bluevale were the winners. Winners in the pony classes and races were Murray Edgar of Belgrave, Theresa Dale of Clinton and John Koskamp of Blyth. In the four horse heavy hitch, Eugene McLeod of Kincardine won over four other entries. In other heavy horse classes, top winners were Andrew Catto of Port Elgin, Oliver Bannerman of Monkton, Russell Teeple and George Greg, both of Paisley. Melvin Randall of Glanworth was winner in the under 44 inch pony class. Larry. J. Kelly, medical officer at Canadian Forces Base Clinton, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Posted to CFB Clinton on July 15, he and his wife, the former Jeanne Litke of Kitchener, now live in Adastral Park. They have a six-month-old son, Sean Michael. Captain Kelly is a native of Kitchener and enlisted in the armed forces in September 1965, He attended the University of Western Ontario, graduating in 1968 with his medical degree. He served his internship at St. Joseph's Hospital, Victoria, B.C., prior to his posting to Clinton. The September meeting of the Siiiirlinerhill Ladies Club was held at the home of Ida Wright. Lorna Ellis opened the Meeting with a quiz followed'by prayer- Fourteen members answered the roll call by taking the first initial of their name and naming a city and telling what it was noted for. Thank you notes came from Joanne Salverda and Lorna Ellis. Everyone was in, favor of having secret travelling parties again this year, with Marion Snell and Vera Gibbings in charge. Edith Wright conducted an advertisement quiz won by Donna Oibbings, Ida Wright gave a reading called "Passing of the Each House." Margaret Wright gave a reading called "Tile WO." The October meeting is to be held at Marianne Colclough's. The roll call is to be "a hallowe'en prank done in younger days."
