154 Albert St. at 3:40 o'clock
Sunday.
The owner; Mrs. ,Hoggart, left
her home in the .early afternoon
to .visit a daughter, • A boarder
was also out of the house when
the fire started, police said,
An alert neighbor; Tom
Fletcher of 147 Albert. St.,
noticed smoke coming out -of
the eaves of the Hoggart house:
His promptness in calling the fire
department kept damage to
about $500 or $600.
Fire Chief Grant Rath said
there were fires in the kitchen,
pantry and a bedroom. With a
little more headstart, the chief
said, the fires would have caused
extensive damage and made it
impossible to trace the cause,
The fire chief said a rear, door
was probably left unlocked prior
to the fire. He said it is possible'
that children started the fires.
Among other incidents under
investigation by police is a car
theft which occurred. last
Saturday night. POlice said an
auto owned by Howard Tait was
reported missing from the.
driveWay of the Tait home on
Huron Street in the early
morning hours. The car was later
abandoned in Galt,
Police are also looking for the
person who caused an estimated
$500 damage to the Bank of
Montreal's clock at the main
corner last week. One or more
stones were reportedly thrown
at the clock.
Several speakers were torn
from posts at Brownie's Drive-in
Theatre in town last Saturday
night. Damage was estimated at
$150.

Brings family of 'six
to Adastral Park
Jim. Puddifant, recently
posted to CFB Clinton as a,
member of the Warrant Officers
School instruction staff, has
been promoted to the rank of
chief warrant officer.
He is a native of Stoney
Mountain, Man., where be
attended high school prior to
enlisting in the Royal Canadian
Navy in August 1950, He was
trained in the communications
trade field and served on HMOS
Athabaskan as a signalman
during the Korean War.
He was subsequently posted
to the Bast Coast Fleet where he
was employed in a variety of
communications assignments in
Halifax and afloat. Prior to his
posting to Clinton, he was an
instructor at the Leadership
School, CFB Cornwallis.
Jim is married to the former
Catherine Sonier of Summerside,
P.E.T. and lives in Adastral Park.
There are six boys in the family
— David, 13; Gordon, 12; Hal,
10; Gregory, 9; Michael, 8 and
Patrick, 6. As might be
expected, CWO Puddifant is
active in boys' sports and is a
qualified hockey coach.
Two persons were hurt,
neither' seriously, in a collision
on Huron Street at Shipley
Street late Saturday night, Both
ears involved were 'damaged
badly. The driver of One, .,larnes.

been charged with careless.

Lobb of Chatham, Lotib;s,

The Lobb car reportedly was
stopped in the eastbound lane,
waiting for .a break in oncoming
traffic before turning left into
Shipley Street. The Bolger car
apparently crashed into the right
rear of the Lobb car, pushing it
Across the westbound lane and
partially over the curb at the
northeast corner of the
intersection.
The Bolger car veered around
the Lobb auto on the right and
also crossed the westbound lane.
Then it jumped the curb and
crossed the sidewalk, coming to
rest in bushes on the lawn of 133
Huron St,
Earlier Saturday, about 8:45
p.m., an auto driven by DOnald
J. Smith of 206 Albert St., hit
the rear of a car driven by
Louise J. Tideswell, 237 Victoria
St. The accident occurred in
Victoria Street as the
southbound Tideswell auto was
turning into a driveway. Damage
totaled somewhat more than
$200. No one was reported
hurt. Part of a Bell Canada
truck's hydraulic boom bumped
a PUC streetlight pole in front of
72 Albert Street shortly after
noon Friday. Driver of the truck
was Daniel MacDougall of
Arthur. The pole tipped but did
not topple. Damage to the pole
and its base wail estimated at
$250, police said.

Street, Clinton, was involved in a
single-car accident resulting in
$125 damage,
On Tuesday, Sept. 2 on
Highway 21 south of Beyfield,
Walter William Becker, Exeter,
was involved in a single-car
accident resulting in $1,100
damage to his vehicle, Becker
received injuries. •
On Tuesday, Sept. 2 on
Goderich Township Road 35
north of County Road 13,
Valentina Galachuik 344 James
Street, Clinton, and Adrian
Wammes, RR 2, Clinton, were
involved in a two-car accident
resulting in an approximate total
damage of $125 to the vehicles.
On Tuesday, Sept. 2 on
Highway 8 east of Clinton,
William Douglas Thomson, RR
4, Clinton, and Robert
Branchard, CFB Moosonee, were
involved in a two-car accident
resulting in an approximate total
damage of $600.
On Tuesday, Sept. 2 on
County Road 8 south of County
Road 25, Harold Bruce Grigg,
RR 1, Goderich, was involved in
a single-truck accident resulting
in $400 damage to his vehicle.
On Saturday, Sept. 6 on
Highway 8, west of County
Road 27, Larry Parker, Adastral
Park, was involved in a single-car
accident resulting in $1,000
damage to the vehicle,
