Tonight I start holidays...,
Well* that is to say, tonight the
newspaper for which I WQTic is

vacati on-
You know something? I'm
not looking forward to the
coming week. Sure, I'm as ready
as anyone else for time off from
the work-a-day world, but I'm
not at all pleased about the
prospects for the next seven
days. Every time f g0 on
vacation with my husband. I
come home more tired than
when I left,
We're two different types
when it comes to holidays. He's
a traveller -'- I'm a sitter,

Since school closed many of

Miss Pat Tebbutt left June 8

dark, have a quick snack and hit
the sack for another day just the
same as the last,
Myconception of a holiday is
sleeping until good and
ready to get up, lazing around
over a cup of coffee until noon,
lying in a lounge until supper
and sitting round a fire until I
get sleepy. If I had two solid
weeks of this kind of living, I
pink I could go without a
holiday again until Christmas.
But I know my husband
better than that. He says he
agrees with me that our vacation
should be slow and easy this
summer but when it actually
comes to sitting conteridedly for
holidaying at June's-former
hcitne an "the 16th.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Oakes and

a week or s restlessl get restless
after first day or so,
Last summer we had ,an
exhausting week,
Would you believe that in one
4 ay we crossed the
.Canada-U.S,A, border six times,
not once et the same spot?
That's the kind, of a pace we
kept,
And that Was the year we
went to the ball game in Tiger
Stadium. It was a double-header
and the first game lasted 17
horribly humid" het innings. By
the start of the second .contest,
darkness had fallen and the air
was a little cooler, but. I had
spent every ounce of energy I
possessed. I begged to go home,
and my rather reluctant husband
agreed, especially since we
needed an early start in the
morning.
When he started the
up-and-at-'em, routine the
following A.M., I was still in
dreamland, As a dutiful wife
though, I climbed out of the
sack and into the car for ,the
day-long journey to Niagara
Falls.
Arrival in the Falls sent a
'signal through my husband's
energetic brain. Who goes to the
Falls without seeing them under
the lights? The kids were
ecstatic. At 11 o'clock that
evening I was draped over the
damp stone wall in the front of
the falls, too weary to appreciate
the view and very grateful my
husband held onto my arm to
keep me from falling in a limp
mass over the boiling brink.
The promise that evening had
been that I could sleep late in
the morning. We hadn't counted
on the fact my husband would
remember, quite by accident, a
relative in a little village nearby.
It. just wouldn't be neighborly to
pass by so close and not drop in.
Bright and early we were on
our way to the cousin's home.
My husband had been right. Our
host was pleased to see us — so •
pleased, in fact, he quickly
organized a whole day's activity
to keep us from getting bored.
That. day lasted well into the
small hours of the next morning.
And so it went, day after
tiresome day. By the 'dine we
arrived' home 'again- -felt, •like a
harp that had come Unarm*: fio
The payoff came when I was
faced with the mounds of
washing while the rest of the
.family rested under a shade tree
on the lawn!
That's why I hate • vacation
time. I don't get pearly so tired
at work.
See you through bleary eyes
next week.

On 'Friday last a grass field
belonging to Mr, John Pickett,
on the Huron Road, caught fire
from a spark from a iocornotiye,
but by prompt attention the fire
was checked .before a great deal
of damage was done.
The grasshoppers are very ,
plentiful in some sections,
destroying the pastures and
making -sad havoc with the oats
And some .of the root .crops; on
the beach. in Goderich township
they are lying dead in large
numbers on .the sand, so
numerous they could be
shovelled up.
Medical men say that never in
their experience was there as
little sickness in Clinton as there
is just now; this is. good for the
town, though it may be hard for
the doctors.

SAFETY WITH SOLVENTS
Use caution when working
with any floor finish which
contains solvents, advises the
Canadian Paint Manufacturers
Association. Rags soaked with
solvents or varnish should be
burned or put in a bucket of
water immediately after you
finish with them. Working in a
well-ventilated area with
windows and doors open will
reduce the chance of solvent
fumes accumulating and being
ignited. A last reminder: don't
use electrical equipment and
don't smoke while you're
working with solvents. Put out
any pilot lights in stoves or
furnaces when working in their
