Mother Nature, in one of her more vicious moments, flattened Exeter district crops with a
bombardment of hail and deluge of rain last Thursday, Corn in field above, along Highway 4, is of a
hybrid variety named, ironically, "pride." Clinton, which escaped the storm entirely, was able to help
the storm victims by opening its hospital to half a dozen adult patients and one infant who were
among those evacuated when flood waters rushed through South Huron District Hospital. Nurses
accompanied the Exeter patients, some of whom were still in the Clinton hospital yesterday.—Staff

In the Dept. of Agriculture
ands Food's weekly crop report,
Don S. Pullen, Huron County
agricultural representative,
reported that the general area of
greatest crop damage in last
Thursday's Exeter district rain
and hail storm was from the 4th
concession of Stephen Township
east to the 7th concession of
Usborne.. Highway 83 and
slightly above close to Exeter
was the approximate northern
boundary and thence almost to
the lower border of Usborne in
the south.
After flying over the affected
section last Saturday, Mr. Pullen
said crops closest to Exeter were,
the most severely damaged with
very heavy losses expected in
cereals, beans and corn.
Depending on weather
conditions, corn may recover
sufficiently for ensilage
purposes. Fortunately, he added,
a large percentage of canning pea
acreage had already been
harvested.
Other areas of Huron had
some rain during the last week
and it should benefit crops, said
Mr. Pullen. Some lodging from
driving rain occurred east of
Seaforth and in the Lucknow
district.
Most crops in Huron appear
to be growing well. Some winter
wheat has been swathed. Haying
is completed except for a few
bales to draw in from some
fields.
SUMMER FATIGUE
Studies of summer heat
sickness have shown that as little
as five percent loss of salt from
the body produces weariness.
Heat fatigue follows in three
stages: loss of will to work,
dizziness, cramps and fainting. It
is extremely difficult for anyone
in good health to get a
dangerous excess of salt. For
most people, seasoning with salt,
in amounts to suit the taste,
results in what may be called a
normal intake of salt.
