Rambling with Lucy •E
BY LUCY H. vvoQD4
Mrs, Charles Bell is entitled to use the initials A.C. after her name.
e has a certificate to show that she is a member of the Exalted
rder of Active Arctic Circle Qrsmsers.
The certificate was signed by the captain on a flight from Dawson
Inuvik last June 17. 'Another Arctic Circle crossing was made
ying from Inuvik to Churchill the foilowing day.
Last June 1, Mrs. Bell left Malton Airport with Mr, and Mrs. Alan
albraith of Clinton and Miss Janis Galbraith. Members of ,The
primly Hunter Show were aboard. The craft touched down at
innipeg on the flight to Calgary, After sight-seeing in that city, the
arty went by train to Banff and saw the usual tourist attractions
nd went up the chairlift. From Banff they visited Johnson Canyons
ad Eisenhower Mountain.
Arriving at Vancouver by train, they made Bayshore Inn their
eadquarters. They then flew to Prince Rupert, B.C., but it was
ggy and the plane landed at Terrace Bay. On the bus to Prince
upert, they enjoyed the mountain scenery and slopes covered with
lue flowers, wild pink roses and fire bush.
Prince Rupert is a lovely city of 16,00Q, increasing by from one
o six thousand in the tourist season, It is the world halibut fishing
entre where fisherman may make as much as $30,000 in six
oaths, The houses are very beautiful.
They boarded the vessel Taku to go up the inner channel to
3kagway and were watching from the bridge until 2:30 a.m. in broad
laylight. They sighted two whales (one a killer whale) and a school
)f porpoises on the voyage. Mrs. Bell was intrigued with the red,
vange and green lights which guided the ship up the channels.
At Skagway, they saw "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" which is
staged every time a boat arrives. They took the little train to
Nhitehorse and it stopped for lunch at Bennett.
And they learned the world is very small. At Miles Canyon, Alan
Galbraith was speaking to a man from Sarnia and mentioned his
ame and hometown. Another man spoke up and said: "I was at
lFB Clinton five years ago. You gave me a ride from Dundas and
ince it was a nasty night, you insisted on driving me right to the
ates. Janis was a girl with pigtails then."
In the mountains, the party visited an Indian Cemetery where
ittle houses were built over the graves. Then they took the bus 615
niles to Dawson. Forest fires were burning and the next day the
oad was closed. They entered the Klondike Valley and went down,
town, down! They were registered at the Downtown Hotel, which is
a it was in 1898-1901. Among other stops, they saw the homes of
lobed Service and Pierre Berton and for a dollar apiece were taught
low to pan for gold.
In an Anglican Church in Dawson, they watched National Film
loard slides of territory they were about to tour and during the
Irograin one woman asked Mrs. Galbraith where she was from.
"Clinton, Ontario," replied Mrs. Galbraith, "but my mother is
rom Bayfield."
"Bayfield!" said the woman, "We know it. We knew the
Vidcombes and went to Bayfleld with the Pyes."
The' four travellers were also pleased with the friendliness and
tindness of the people. By the chance remark of a waitress who
nentioned Clinton, the Galbraiths and Mrs. Bell met people from
be Clinton Creek Mine. One man of influence, H. Henson, invited
hem to his boat, insisted on sending a taxi 65 miles for them and
trranged a tour of the mine — a rare privilege. Their host at dinner in
he private executive dining room was Benoit Levasseur, manager of
ood services for the mine. Mr. and Mrs. Levasseur later entertained
he Clinton travellers at their home.
They dined at 12:30 a.m. and arrived back at their lodgings at
:30 a.m. — at that hour it was daylight and the Indian children
ere playing around the cabins.
The four stayed at the Roman Catholic hostel at Inuvik because
eir reservations were not honored. It was a wild scene, Lucy is
Id. The Indians were drinking, the girls were running. The
infusion was a result of trappers'corning in with pelts?'
At Yellowknife, they were guests of Graham Bleakhirst, a
overnment worker and a man known here because he spent
olidays with the Galbraiths. The Northwest Territory Council was
ieeting when the Clinton group visited and they were introduced to
ouncil members. Mr. Galbraith enjoyed fishing in Great Slave Lake.
At - Churchill the contrast betWeen the Indian and Eskimo
ttlements was most apparent. New homes built for the Indians a
w years ago have become slum-like, but the Eskimo log houses
lit earlier are kept neat and tidy. One could drive only seven miles
Churchill.
Having lived in this vicinity (Bay field) all her life — a place where
cal option has been in force for more than 50 years — the open bar
ith its attendant drunken ribaldry was a great shock to Mrs. Bell.
he was also astonished at the business being done in northern towns
id by unexpected crowds.
They returned by plane to Winnipeg from Churchill, stopping two
Ways before returning home from their three-week jaunt.
