Clinton News-Record, 1969-06-19, Page 12Hensall WM$ ANNIVERSARY The Women's Missionary Society of Carmel Presbyterian Church celebrated its 79th anniyersary last Thursday, with guests present from Kippen United Church, Zurich Lutheran Church, Arnold Circle and Home Helpers of the Hensall Church. The president, Mrs. R. A, Orr, extended a welcome. Devotional and study was given by Mrs. George Walz and Mrs. Earl Campbell. Vocal duets were sung by Mrs. Malcolm Dougall and Mrs. Pearl Love. Guest speaker was Mrs, Eric Luther of Hensall, Mrs, George Walker had the honor of cutting the 79th anniversary cake made by Mrs. Clarence Volland and decorated by Mrs. Malcolm Dougall. A delicious luncheon was served. LIGHTNING STRIKES Hensall firemen were called to the home of Mrs. Mary Hildebrant of Richmond Street about 9 p.m. last Thursday when lightning struck a lean-to at the rear of the home and set it ablaze. The severe electrical storm which passed oyer Hensall around 5 p.m. also did other damage. A large elm tree with a double trunk on the farm of Stewart Bell, one mile and a quarter west of Hensall, was struck by lightning, Several TV sets were damaged and an electric clock on the wall of a resident was blown apart. MILTON WILLERT The funeral service for the late Milton Willert of Goderich was held Saturday in Goderich. Mr. Willert died in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital last Wednesday. He was 52. He is survived by his wife, the former Gladys Saundercock, formerly of Hensall;,a daughter, Patricia, at home; his mother, Mrs. Amelia Willert, Dashwood; brother, Alvin, Exeter; and two sisters, Mrs. Cliff (Doris) Penhale, Dashwood and Mrs. R. J. (Ada) Newton, London. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE At an indoor picnic in the Legion Hall June 11, Hensall Women's Institute voted to contribute $25 towards the $50,000 needed for expansion of MacDonald Institute, Guelph University, to celebrate its 75th Anniversary. The Shifty Chefs 4-H Girls' club performed a skit, The leaders, Mrs. William Fuss and 117rs. >,. ,Tom - Travers, were presented with gifts by Mrs. R. D. Elgie. It was decided to sponsor an open meeting of the Huron County Historical Society in September. Mystery prizes were won by Mrs. Annie Reid and Mrs. Harry rHorton. Program convenors were Mrs. R. A. Orr and Mrs. Carl Payne. Hostesses were Mrs. H. Horton and Mrs. R. M. Peck. BRIDAL SHOWER Mrs. Gordon Schwalm and Marjorie were hostesses at their home for a miscellaneous shower for Miss Verlyn Miller, RR 1, Hensall, bride -elect of this month. Twenty-four relatives, friends and neigabord attended the shower last Friday evening. EARNS MASTER'S Mr. and Mrs. Laird Mickle and Charles returned last week from a verppleasant autc trip to Betnlehem, Pa., where they attended Lehigh University graduation exercises at which Charles received his master of arts degree in international relations. HERBERT NEILL,.t,, Joseph Herbert Neill, founder of the Huron County Pioneer Museum, died in. Victoria Hospital, London, on Friday, June .13, three days after his 34th birthday. He had been a resident of Huronview. Mr. Neill was born in Hawick Township on June 10, 1885, a son of Joseph Neill and the former Mary Jane Neill. He lived in Gorrie until moving to Goderich in 1935. He was in the harness and shoe repair business before becoming curator of the Huron County Museum. He founded the Huron County Museum in 1935 and built many of the exhibits himself. It, was in the 1930's he became seriously interested in collecting such items as one sees now in a number of pioneer museums. "His museum" now houses over 1.1,000 -exhibits from a needle to a railway steam locomotive, began, according to Mr. Neill's own words with an old "tallow candle lantern." Mr. Neill was Honorary President of the Huron County Historical Society; honorary member Howick Branch 307 Royal Canadian Legion, and a member of Victoria L.O.L. 182. To honor Mr. Neill on his 78th birthday in 1963 he was JAMES James Melvin Reid, a Stanley Township native who lived at 36 Yorkdale Crescent, Weston, died last Friday at Humber Memorial ' Hospital in Weston at the age of 82. The son of Andrew and Annie (Murray) Reid, he was born March' 14, 1887, and lived in Stanley Township until 1922 when he moved to Clinton. He lived in Clinton and worked as a thresher until 1945 when he became a stationary engineer and moved to Weston. He retired in 1966. He was married in 1916 to the former Millie McClinchey who died in 1942. He was a member of Dixon Gospel Temple (Pentecostal) in Weston and had been a member of Ontario Street United Church in Clinton. JOHN ANDREW TORRANCE John Andrew Torrance, RR 2, Bayfield, died at home on Wednesday June 11 after a lengthy illness. He was 89. Mr. Torrance was born in Goderich Township on January 25, 1880, the son of John Torrance and the former Mary Reid. He haci lived all his life on the 6th concession. He was married to the former Jane A. Williams in 1922. Mr. Torrance was a member of Grace United Church, Porter's Hill. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mrs. Mary C. Manning, who died in April, 1967. Surviving with his wife are a sister, Mrs. P. Elliott, Clinton, and a grandson, John C. Manning. ,The funeral service was held at the Ball Funeral Home, Clinton, on Friday, June 13. Rev. Donald Beck, Bayfield, officiated. Interment was in Clinton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Douglas Stirling, Grant Stirling, Ivison Torrance, Harry Torrance, Harry Williams and William Townsend. n}aue an .honorary member of the Museums Section of the Ontario Historical Society, the first to be accorded this honor, A portrait of Mr. Neill has been painted by J. W. McLaren, of Beniiller, president of the county historical society, and will hang in the museum. The picture was to have been presented to Mr. Neill officially at the monthly meeting of the county council, 'but he was unable to attend due to ill. health, Mr. Neill was a member of the Salvation Army Goderich Corps. Surviving are one brother, Ira Neill, Wingham; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren,. and one great great-grandchild. The funeral service was held at Stiles Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Monday June 16. Capt. Ralph Hewlett officiated. A memorialservice was held by the members of Victoria L.O.L. 182 at $tiles Funeral Home on Sunday evening. Interme'xt was in Wroxeter Cemetery. Pallbearers were Archie Neill, Bruce Neill, Eldon Neill, Dennis Neill, Randall Marriott, and Ted Keating. Honorary pallbearers were staff members of the Huron County Museum. M. REID Survivors include a son, the Rev. Kenneth Reid of Forest; a daughter, Mrs. Roderick (Gertrude) Gorrill of Weston; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Margaret) Jahn • and Mrs. Fred (Verna) Greenbury; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The funeral service was held at Ball Funeral Home, Clinton, on Monday with the Rev. David Bowen of Weston officiating. Interment was in 'Bayfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert and Charles Reid, Alvin Keys, Clayton Keys, Keith Keys and Elmore Stephenson. Sixteen members of the Commons standing committee on agriculture inspected farms in Hensall and Clinton last Saturday on a nationwide tour. Hensall personals Mrs. Gordon Schwalm, who is the children's secretary of London -Hamilton Synodical and the Huron Presbyterial, attended the presbyterial workshop at the home of Mrs. Carl Remus in Paisley on Monday of this week. Love, Caro, Michigan, and Mrs. Albert Keys, Exeter, were guests last Thursday with Mrs. J. E. McEwen. Mrs. R. A. Orr was the lucky winner of a hamper on CKSL Radio, London, last Thursday. Visitors last week with Mrs. George Hess were her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Griff Hughes, of Victoria, B.C., and their daughter, Mrs. Marjorie' Campbell, of Sault Ste. Marie.
