(Special)—This is the revolutionary grapefruit diet that everyone is suddenly talking about. Literally thousands upon thousands of copies have been passed from hand to hand in factories, plants and offices throughout the U.S. and Canada. Word of its success has spread like wildfire. Because this is the diet that really works. We have testimonials in our files reporting on the success of this diet. +If you follow it exactly, you should lose 10 pounds in 10 days. There will be no weight loss in the first four days. But you will suddenly drop 5 pounds on the 5th day. Thereafter 'you will lose 1'/2 pounds every two days until you get down to your proper weight. Best of all, there will be no hunger pangs. Now revised and enlarged, this new diet plan lets you stuff yourself with foods that were formerly "forbidden," such as big steaks trimmed with fat, roast or fried chicken, rich gravies, mayonnaise, lobster swimming in butter, 'bacon fats, sausages and scrambled eggs. You can eat until you are full, until you cannot possibly eat any more. And still lose '10 pounds in the first ten days plus 11/z pounds every two days thereafter until your weight is down to normal. The secret behind this new "quick weight loss" diet is simple. Fat does not form fat. And the grapefruit juice in this new diet acts as a catalyst (the "trigger"), to start the fat burning process. You stuff yourself on the permitted food listed in the diet plan, and stillsloee ,unsiightly fat and leXces ; dy fluids. When the ;fat and bloat are gone you will cease to lose weight and your weight will remain constant. A copy of this new and startling successful diet plan • can be obtained by sending $2 to GRAPEFRUIT DIET PUBLISHERS, 1213 Premier Way, Calgary 6, Alberta: Money -back guarantee. If after trying the diet plan you have not lost 7 pounds in the first seven days, and 11/2 pounds every two days thereafter, simply return the diet plan and your $2 will be refunded promptly and without argument. WOOD Sitting back and viewing world conditions from "The Hut," Lucy decided that it's a crazy, .mixed up scene. Ml the world is at sixes and sevens! One set of scientists seems to be puliinfl against the, other. In a cgnvoeation address at the University of Western Ontario after receiving an honorary science degree, Dr. Robert F, Legget, a director of the National Research Council, warned better distribution of resources must be achieved .to pope with a world population that will likely double to about 7,400,000,000 in the next 30 years. Hunger breeds war. In the interest of peace, world nations must. share food, and above all, science technology and knowledge. The United Nations provides the vehicle, he said. "First and foremost," he said, "there must be world-wide appreciation of the essential requirements of birth control if world hunger is to be averted." Dr. Legget warned Canada will not be exempt from the perils of population which will probably reach 40,000,000 by the end of the century. "Complete new cities will have to be established. Several thousand square miles of our best agricultural land will be covered by city streets." The latter reminded Lucy of a prediction that people would eventually all be living in high rise apartments and never know cultivation of flowers and vegetable gardens as we know them today. She gave a sigh of relief and thanksgiving that she had been born at the beginning of the 20th century and known the joy of getting one's hands into God's good clean earth in the springtime! And reaping a harvest from the kitchen garden. And then about birth control! At one time it seemed that "The Pill" was the answer but its original purpose seems to have back -fired. The women who should be reproducing are using it. But in foreign countries and sections of Canada where there is hunger, poverty and the birth rate high, medical. and social workers find that the women refuse to take "The Pill." And today with a rapidly increasing rate of unwed mothers, the youth of our land more or less overlook this birth control pill — perhaps they are wise since it has been known to cause bad side effects in some cases. "Thou shalt not commit adultery." If all the angles of this and the nine other commandments given to Moses by God as rules for good living were stressed in education, it would do much to promote self-control and relieve world tensions. The Baby Bonus cheque was instituted to encourage larger families and increase the population in' Canada. Maybe if it is withdrawn in the interest of economy, the population will not explode as rapidly as predicted by Dr. Legget. But while he is predicting that world hunger can be averted by birth control, good agricultural practises and sharing, Lucy reads that scientists at the National Heart Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, are experimenting with keeping an unborn lamb, taken from its mother's womb, alive in a fluid-filled artificial womb. Drs. Warren M. Zapol, Theodore Kolobow and John Pierce attached the umbilical cord to an artificial lung. They are testing this lung's ability to supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the blood without damaging the red blood cells. A series of such experiments is aimed at keeping unborn babies alive outside their mother's womb. The artificial lung can be used to treat lyoline membrane disease- which kills 25,000 American infants a year. The artificial womb could be used to shelter test-tube babies that scientists may create in years to come. If a fetus is not growing properly in a mother's womb, the Doctors could remove it and place it in the artificial womb and try to correct the defects. And the scientists hope to unlock the secrets of fetal growth which are still a mystery. :Lucy wondered why all this experimentation to save the lives of weaklings and increase the population with test-tube babies! "Obviously, delving into the secret of life is fascinating and always has been to the medical scientists. It is thrilling to prolong life, but to start it when our population threatens the world. seems needless. Would it not be better to let nature take its course and the law of average prevail? Away back in her school days, Lucy recalls reading that the ancient. Spartans (considered a cruel people by today's standards) put their babies out on Mt. Olympus for a certain length of time. Only the fittest survived and in this way a strong race developed. Clinton Memorial Shop T. PRYDE and SON CLINTON — EXETER -- SEAFORTH Phone 482-7211 Open Every Afternoon Local Reprssentativi A. W.
