Buyfieh.I councillor quit.s
over policy differenc.es
Village council accepted the
resignation of Councillor Jack
Sturgeon "with regret" at a
special; meeting last week,
Mr, Sturgeon sent a .letter of
resignation to egl.}ncil last week
because of whet .he described as
a disagreement with other
members over "general, council.
business and future policies."
ll a
Vierg clerk, rk, Mrs, Phyllis
Maloney, said. Friday the
vacancy probably will be fined
this week. She said council may
select anyone from the
community to fill the post. One
citizen has been asked, she said,
She refused tQ reveal his
identity.
Mx. Sturgeon, who said he.
may run again for council in this
year's December elections, said
he was disappointed that he was
not invited to the special
meeting. He said he didn't know
it had been held until. he
received a letter from the .Olerlt
Thursday acknowledging
acceptance.
Mr. Sturgeon said he didn't
intend to return to council this
term even If council members
had asked hire t4, but he Wanted
to present his reasons for
resigning at a meeting,
"Maybe it was just as. well
that I wasn't there," he said. "I
might have said something that
would have embarrassed
someone. Bayfield is a small
community and we all have to
live together."
M. Sturgeon would not
elaborate on his reasons ,for
resigning.
"I have differences over some
things," he said. "But I'm not
saying I'mright and they are
wrong -- just differences."
Truck spills salty fluid
A truck hauling 53,000
gallons of liquified calcium
chloride overturned about 3:3U
a.m. Saturday while rounding a
curve on Highway 21 in
Bayfield, spilling its entire
contents over a Small park just
off the highway.
The driver, Alvin Wigle, 37,
of RR. 3, Cottam, was treated
for cuts and bruises at Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital in
Goderich and released,
Damage to the tractor and
tanker units, owned by Pollard
Bros. Ltd. of Harrow, was
estimated at $12,000.
Three members of the
Bayfield volunteer fire

controlling dust on unpaved
roads.

Bird -watching is a most fascinating recreation as Lucy well knows
from the little bit she is able to indulge in it from her chair at the
dining -room table.
Last week guests watched a pair of Baltimore Orioles amongst the
blossoms in Bell's cherry tree. Systematically they poked their bills
into each blossom on a bunch looking for and finding insects. Only
one pair in a large tree when 20 odd years ago there would have been
several pairs or a small flock!
As they worked assiduously for food, Lucy remarked that it was
such a pity that the balance of nature had ever been upset by
spraying fruit trees. The poison spray has killed the bird population
and our song birds decrease in numbers every year. "The orchards
used to be'full of warblers," remarked a visitor, "and now they are
becoming rare in this district."
Lyle Hill, who feeds the birds both winter and summer, had a
flock of pine grosbeaks pause for feeding the third week in May.
And a pair of rose -breasted grosbeaks are probably nesting on his
property as he sees them frequently. Lucy was surprised the same
week to note a brown thrasher at the feeding station. She has often
heard their turkey -like calls in the summer but only once or twice
glimpsed one in the shrubs at the back of the garden. She also
sighted a Harris' sparrow at the feeding station.
,Mr. and Mrs. P. H. DuBoulay have, perhaps, spotted more birds
than anyone else in Bayfield. Their list for their second year, since
September 1968, stands at 103 at time of writing. They saw a
red-headed woodpecker at the village dump, and on the flats up the
river a pair of green herons, and a pair of Buffle Heads. On May 16
Mrs. DuBoulay identified a Cape May Warbler in Bell's cherry tree.
Guests of Canon and Mrs. F. H. Paull, "Camborne House"
from
m
Friday to Tuesday, were her sister, er, Miss Carrie Dixon, and Miss Mary
Secord, Brantford. They are members of the Brantford Nature Club.
Miss Dixon is past -president and Miss Secord edits the club
publication, "The Brant Goose." They were, Birding at Long Point
from May 11 to 16, chiefly to observe the migration of warblers.
The highlight of their trip was identifying a pair of red•bellied
woodpeckers. This is a southern bird which is sometimes seen along
Lake Erie but which Miss Secord had never sighted before in 25
years of Birding. It has been reported to the Federation of Ontario
Naturalists.
The ladies stayed in Port Rowan but went to certain spots where
they sat quietly under trees and the birds appeared as if from
nowhere and on other occasions they hiked and sighted others.
Some of . the birds are common but besides the red -bellied
woodpecker they sighted dozens more species.
In and near Bayfield they were delighted to sight a pair of
red-headed woodpeckers, scarlet tangers in more than one location
and a thrush which they thought was a Brown Thrasher sitting on
her nest.
