Bye bye baby bonus
Shirley Keller
The darndest people are upset
because there are some
indications that the baby bonus
may be terminated in an attempt
to halt inflation in Canada.
Now, don't ask mewhy
politicians have chosen to cut
expenses through the baby
bonus or I'm apt to ask you a
question like "Why not for
goodness sake?"
That's right. Why not cut out
the baby bonus? Although I'm
just as pleased as anyone else
when the baby bonus arrives on

the 20th of each month, I still
ask why it should be retained in
favor of other vital services,
Or maybe those who oppose
the Trudeau government's
suggestion regarding baby
bonuses are among those
dunderheaded idiots who clamor
for increased government
expenditures and lower taxes!
Now that would be an
accomplishment of some
magnitude, wouldn't it?
You're not ggite that foolish
eh? You actually realize the
country can't continue to spend
more than it takes in,
You are ready to admit it is
just possible that a federal
government budget is basically
the same as a grocery budget —
if you are allotted $25 per week
and you are spending $35 time
and time again, you are soon in
trouble, .Either you don't have
the money to pay the fuel and
the hydro, or you have to cut
back on, the nice little frilly
extras, like babysitters and
booze and new clothes and
gasoline and similar luxury
items. Or, if you've grown so
accustomed to the better things
in Iife, you may choose to omit
certain convenience foods like
instant chocolate for the milk
and whipped topping for the pie
and fresh fruit for the salad or
cream for the coffee.
You get the picture. Common
sense gives the answer every
time.
Prime Minister Trudeau isn't
going to be a popular man with
the voter, I suppose, but he
should . be. He's the first prime

The Explorer Girls of Ontario

successful tea and sale of home

Saturday afternoon. The tea was

On Sunday night, May 4, the

minister in year: .d years who
has told the people .the truth,
like it or lump it,
Says Trudeau, 'I'm telling
the country we can't fulfill all
expectations, We have to find
the money to pay for them, and,
because we don't want to raise
taxes indefinitely, we're going to
curtail expenditures and cut
back on some of the programs."
Those are words I can
understand. The man has finally
shown me his worth and I'm
impressed. r was getting pretty
weary of the same old
gobbledygook most politicians
use -- either blame the trouble
on the other parties or give the
people the run-around about the
projected figures and the gross_
national product, or some such
garbage.
But what really grabs me
about this whole thing is the
kind of people who are most
concerned about the possible
demise of the baby bonus.
The loudest complainers are
folks who are making plenty of
money to feed and clothe their
youngsters without a
government subsidy.
A few hoots and hollers are
coming from people without a
child or a chick to support, and
of course, there are cries from
the die-hard Tories who
predicted lunacy when the
Liberals first introduced the
legislation and now who
foresee dire disaster at the first
hint of the program's end.
It would be interesting to take
a study on • the ways the baby
bonus is spent each month in the
average family across Canada.
Some families stash the
monthly endowment in the bank
each month and then gloat over
the , great sacrifice they have
made on the child's behalf.
Some moms and dads use
that gift to pay for a monthly
wing -ding with the kids getting
heartbreaking memories about
their drunken parents.
Many families spend the baby
bonus on clothes and shoes for
the children, perhaps better
clothes and shoes than the child
needs or is good for him. Others
put the money towards dental
bilis, doctor bills, food bills,
education bills, the real purpose
of the baby bonus, but not of
too much value, unless there is a
large family and a thrifty
mother.
I'm sorry to see the baby
bonus go. It comes as a pleasant
supplement to the family
budget. But I suppose we can
scrape by without it, and if it
does something to steady the
cost of living, I'll gladly
relinguish it today.
Perth sheriff is speaker
at Legion V -E banquet
BY A, L. COLQUHQUN
Maurice W, Andrew, Q.C.,
Stratford the sheriff of Perth
County, who was the defence
lawyer for German Brigadier
General Kurt Meyer, after World
War I1, asserts that the general.
was never proven guilty of the
crime for which he was rflarged
— that of ordering 18 .Canadian
prisoners to be shot.
Mr, Andrew was guest
speaker at the annual VE -Day
banquet of Clinton 'Branch 140
of the Royal Canadian Legion in
the hall Wednesday, May 7.
The lawyer, a member of the
militia before the war, enlisted
on August 31, 1939, and helped
organize the Perth Regiment,
which he later commanded in its
fi,- ting in Italy and on , the
Western Front. Mr. Andrew
reminisced about the regiment
which included many men from
Huron County.
The speaker recalled the
many technicalities of the young
German general's trial, through
which he had one assistant
defence lawyer while the
prosecuting team had 15
members including Clarence
Campbell, the president of the
National Hockey League.
Ending his interesting talk,
Mr. Andrew said, "Let us never
forget to celebrate VE -Day as
long as we live."
The speaker was introduced
by 3. William Cqunterr, a past
president of the branch, .and.
thanked and presented with a
gift by Don Stevens, the newest
member of Clinton Legion.
Cameron Proctor was overall
chairman of the banquet and
Legion president, Percy Brown,
assisted with the introduction of
guests.
Jim Doherty, a teacher at
CHSS, entertained by singing
three songs, mixed with some
Irish humor.
Among the guests were:
Larry Jones, president of
Clinton Kinsmen; Don C,
Colquhoun, president of Clinton
Lions; Murray Holmes, president
of Huron Fish and Game
Conservation Association;
Clinton Mayor Don Symons; Ed
Sell of Blyth, Legion zone
commander; William Chamber, a
past president of Clinton Legion
who is zone commander -elect;
and Chester Merriam of Tara,
chairman of Dominion
Command of the Royal
Canadian Legion.
The roast beef dinner was
prepared and served by the
ladies auxiliary to the legion.
