Guides, mothers
hold banquet
More than 150 Brownies,
guides and Ratters,

attended a banquet in their

mother -daughter event in three
years Y- at the Clinton Legion
hall recently.
Regine Borbaniuk, women's
auxiliary •_president, welcomed
Maty McMillan, retiring division
commissioner and her successor,
Mrs, Hazel McCreath, both of
Ooderich and special guests at
the dinner here.
Mrs. George Wench, district
commissioner, assisted by
Rangers Martha Corrie and Judy
Finley, presented Miss McMillan
with an attractive gift --a token
for her many years of service to
the Guide movement.
A .highlight of the evening
was the presentation of the
all-around cord to Guides
Lorraine Thompson and the
golden hand to Brownie Susan
'Poop. The girls later entertained
the mothers with a variety
program.
Leaders of the groups include

Mrs, Bud Kuehl, Guide
lieutenant; Mrs, Harvey Carter,
1st Brownies brown owl; Mrs.
Donald Eastman, tawny owl and
Mrs. Ken Wood, fluffy owl.

4th Brownies brown owl; Mrs.
Andy Peterson, tawny owl; and
Mrs. Roy Cantelon, fluffy owl.

AFTERNOON UNIT
Mrs. A. Coleman conducted a
meeting of the afternoon unit of
the Ontario Street United
Church Women last Tuesday
with 26 members present.
The devotional period was led
by Mrs. A. J. McMurray, assisted
by Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Ceriei
Van Damme. Mrs. A. Popp
showed slides of a recent bus
trip to Florida. Mrs. Van Damme
led the women in two songs.
A coffee party, bazaar and
bake sale will be held in the
ladies' parlor on May 15, The
general meeting will he on May
14 at 8:30 p.m. UCW members
will visit an institution for
retarded < children°` near'
Palmerston next month.
After the meeting Tuesday, a
social hour was spent with
members of the December group
serving refreshments. Group
members are Mrs. A. Groves,
Mrs. F. Lobb, Mrs. J. Gibson,
Mrs. H. L. Perry and Mrs. M.
Webster.
EVENING UNiT
The evening unit of Ontario
Street United Church Women
met in the church parlor with 30
members present.
Lois Elliott read a poem on
spring and Gwen Lavis gave the
theme for worship.
Mrs. Harry Ball, guest
speaker, was introduced by Mrs.
Lavis and thanked by Helen
Trewartha. Mrs. Ball spoke on
her travels and showed pictures.
The meeting closed with prayer
and Group 1 served lunch,

Many seek school
Roy B. Dunlop, business
administrator for the Huron
•• 'County schools, told the °board'
of education Monday that he
received 12 applications for the
position of chief accountant and
office manager; 19 applications
for the position of manager of
purchasing and services and 71
applications for plant
superintendent. All the openings
were advertised recently.
The board deckled to let Mr.
Dunlop screen the applications
and bring the names of three for
each position before the board
which will make the final
decision on hiring but will listen
to the recommendations of Mr.
Dunlop.
John Cochrane, director of
education, informed the board
that the contractor for work at
BIyth Public School claimed no
jobs
liability for necessary work to;
cure a sewage problem at the,
school. However, Mr. Cochrane
said he had met with
representatives of the architects, ,
and contractors and felt they
would meet some of the costs
"forood public relations."

travelled to Toronto during the
past weekend where they, as
former employees of Canada '
Packers, were guests at the
Royal York and attended the
27th annual dinner of the
Quarter Century club of that
company in the Canadian room

Huron Is !fifth in province
in confirmed rabies cases
Confirmed cases, of TWO

according to the federal.
agriculture, departtnent's animal
health branch which said
Ontario bad the most cases —
1,985.
Within the prgvince, the
incidence of ;rabies was highest
in the counties ,in the Georgian
Bay area and in the .eastern
region, with Huron County
reporting 89 cases.
Three rabid dogs were
reported in flume, fixe eats, 22
bead of cattle, two swine, 41
foxes and 16 skunks. Counties
with higher totals than Huron's
were Bruce, 126; . Grey, 177;
Renfrew, 102 and Simcoe, 106.
Rabies cases involving both
domestic and wild animals
totaled 2,463 across Canada for
the 12 months. This is 881 more
than in the previous year and
only 87 fewer than in 1958-59,
the record year so far for rabies,
the CDA said.
During the year, more than
56,000 cats and dogs • were
vaccinated against rabies at some
320 free 'clinics conducted by
the Health of Animals Branch in
Ontario counties. Clinics are
continuingto be held in areas
where the incidence of the
disease is greatest. '
Wildlife accounted for 1,428
of the cases in 1968-69. Of .this
number, 1,025 were foxes and
358 were skunks, The balance
was made up of small numbers

South Huron Hospital, Exeter,
on Monday.
