Shirley Keller My story this week concerns a Iife and death battle ,for survival. It is a ('►earl -Rending tale about a courageous man whose dearest wish was to be left alone. Except for modern medicine, WS suffering might have been even' greater and his chances of re -awakening all but dimmed. The gentleman in this true life adventure is my . heroic hubby and the dread scourage" that left him pale and deathly cold was a date with the'surgeon to have his tonsils removed. Unlike other - fess stout-hearted males,. my man was never reluctant to. have the job done. After all, our daughter had undergone the ordeal when she was about five and my husband had observed her triumphant return from the operating room. Like any normal father he had been overcome by the sheer magnificence of it all and had collapsed in a heap in a nearby chair where nurses fanned his brow and rubbed his wrists to reactivate the circulation. I was wrong. Where 1 expected a limp lamb to fall in helpless submission to the will of the doctors 1 found a terrible tiger ready to bolt at the sight of a needle and struggle to the death, if need be, at the first whiff of anesthetic. Although I didn't see it myself I heard of the valiant fight he put up to free himself from the clutches of certain death. Time and again he pitted determination against medical madness until he was lefi quieted and still. No one knows what it is that keeps a man lik my husband alive when all the chips arin4 stacked against him. Eve i,,' doctors are unable to explain I!` that mysterious spark which bridges a crisis like my darling faced that horrible day. A miracle? Perhaps.
