Huron to have
15 assessors
The county assessment
department will hire four
more assessors in the spring
to bring its full-time staff to
15 assessors and three clerical
workers, according to E. F.
Hall, assessment commissioner.
There are now 11 assessors
on the county staff, Mr. Hall
told County Council last
month two supervisors, two
grade four assessors, two on
grade three and five at grade
two, One more grade two or
grade.. three assessor and two
trainees will be sought later
this year, he said.
The department has spent
$4,000 on equipment, about
one-quarter of the money
allocated for furnishing its
offices in the new
administration building in
Goderich.
Actual cost of the new
building was reported to be
$134,378 of which the
county has already paid
$60,000.
Commissioner Hall praised
the council for the fine
facilities provided and said the
new building is as adequate as
any in the province,
Snow removal expense
Exceeds county budget
By Shirley .J. ;Keller
The road committee of
Huron County Council
disclosed last month that it
managed to stay within its
estimated budget for 1968,
even though maintenance costs
were unusually high.
The estimate for winter
road care for 1968 was
$115,000, Actual costs v. !'e
about $28,000 above that
figure. County engineer James
Britnell .blamed severe snow
storms in the latter part of
December for much of the
increase.
The county spent
$12,934,30 on snow fence;
$71,889,90 for salting and
sanding, and $58,569.75 for
snow clearing last year,
Mr. Britnell told Council
he was proud of the county
snow crew which often
worked long hours without
complaint during storms. He
compared the cost in the
county of aboutper
y $340. p r
two-lane mile for winter road
maintenance to the
Department of Highways'
budget of about $2,800 per
two-lane mile.
He said while many
residents in the county
expected the same service on
county roads as on provincial
highways it is impossible to
provide with one-third the
snow crew, one-half the
equipment and about
one-seventh of the budget for
provincial highway snow
clearing.
A very wet summer raised
the cost of weed and brush
cutting- and spraying from the
estimated cost of $35,000 to
an actual expenditure of
$52,501.35.
Total road construction
cost to the county during
1968 was $467,471.25 and
total bridge construction
amounted to $135,233.32,
both figures well within the
estimated budgets.

(At. ,the inaugural session .of
council January 21, Judge R.
S. Hetherington praised the
county officials for their
efforts to improve .the county
road system and mentioned in
particular the number of new
modern bridges which replaced
"the old. iron cages that used
to let the horses through")
Total road budget
presented for subsidy was.
$1,378,231.44, the committee
reported.
Warden James Hayter, 1968
road chairman, received
Council's approval for an
annual boost of $1,500 in
Mr, Britnell's salary, now
$19,000,
Mr. Hayter said, "We're
just keeping Jim (Britnell) in
line with other engineers with
his experience and
qualifications."
Warn schools
on spending
TORONTO Education
Minister William Davis said last
Saturday trustees running
Ontario's new 127 county -size
school districts are going to be
faced with a temptation for
big -money spending.
Mr. Davis told the annual
luncheon of the Ontario School
Trustees' Council that the
province's enlarged school
districts will tempt trustees to
"let loose the reins to see who
will get to the most grandiose
objective first."
He warned that a school
system cannot earn a good
reputation "by simply spending
more money than any other"
and that extremely expensive
schools are not necessary, but
well-controlled budgets are.
About 1,330 small school
boards were replaced January 1
with 127 public and separate
school districts.
