Be ice -safety conscious!
Remember, on some of the
larger lakes, cracks can open up
without warning making the ice
conditions extremely dangerous.

Weekend
roundup
Some members of Clinton's
Minot Hockey Weekend
Committee believe this year's
activities were the best in the
10 -year history of the annual
event.
Close to 1,000 tickets were
sold, many of them weekend
passes, and almost everything
went as planned with the
exception of a game between
Wingham and Clinton Bantams
which was cancelled when the
Wingharn team was unable to
travel because of a snowstorm.
Much of what made the
weekend special was due to
visiting teams from Clinton, New
York and Dearborn, Michigan.
Not only did their presence add
an international flavour to the
contests, but many of the boys
and parents renewed friendships
stemming from past years or
started new ones.
The visiting players stayed in
the homes of Clinton hockey
players and special events were
planned to make the weekend an
enjoyable one for their parents.
Following Saturday night's
schedule of play, the Clinton
committee hosted the visitors at
a party held in the auditorium of
the Communtiy Centre and on
Sunday morning many • of the
fathers had a chance to take to
the ice before heading home.
Clinton's Minot Hockey
Weekend is held in conjunction
with Minor Hockey Week in
Canada January 25 - 31 this
year.
Chairman of the committee
Was Bruce Collins who
succeeded Bert Clifford. Jack
Reid Was treasurer, Bill Counter
secretary and Bill Jenkins

Oen first birthday of county Iibraries
officials review progress, problems
By Shirley .Keller
It was evidenJ, t at County
Council's inaugural Meeting
that the public library board's
last 12 months constituted a
year of decision-making under
"pressure" from Miss Carolyn
Croke, county librarian,
Miss Croke, in her report
to Council last week, said.
that in the beginning she had
"a different attitude than the
board". about -how a library
should function.
A city girl,„ Miss Croke said
the rural -oriented library
board in Huron worked well
with her in preparing the
groundwork for "a topnotch
public library service for the
county."
Figures show that 288,3Q6
books circulated in the. 32
library outlets last year, an
increase of 51,087 over 1967.
Book purchases also climbed,
with 701 new volumes added
to the county's library
holdings.
Miss Croke said the. total
stock. of 91,708 books may
drop during the year as
outdated and' damaged books
are discarded.
"The collection of books
for adult reading is the worst
I've seen in a long time," she
said.
Salaries for library staff
will total about $57,400 this
year, estimated Frank
McFadden of Bayfield, library
committee chairman.
He remarked that many
improvements in the library
system are not visible or
tangible, making it difficult
for many people.. to measure
the vast difference between
the old and new systems.
